What language would be the most useful to learn?
    #13638950 -

Other than English. I got a lot of free time on my hands and I would like to go traveling once I have the financial means.

What language would you learn & how would you go about it?

Spanish.

Rosetta stone.

If you live in America, I would strongly suggest learning Spanish. It's the second most used language here.

If you live in the US, probably Spanish.

Since I already know Spanish...I'm determined to start learning Japanese one of these days.

Actually not a bad idea considering the great scenes in Portugal and Brazil, and the fact that Brazil is huge and very interesting.

I'd say Chinese (Mandarin). Come on, we all know that war is coming.

Rosetta stone is OKAY.  It should be a part of a language learning curriculum.  RS teaches you very little about grammar.

Tell Me More by Auralog is THE SINGLE BEST software pack for learning a foreign language, especially Spanish.  I HIGHLY recommend it, and it can be found online.  I assure you that if you DL it you will *not* be disappointed.

Michel Thomas' audiologs are the single BEST resource for pure audio spanish learning.  Give a month to the program (1 CD a week, switch to the next each succeeding week) and I guarantee you'll know more Spanish that you ever have in your life, and not numbers and colors and bullshit; you'll be able to perform basic functions like ask people what time it is, where to go to get somewhere, etc.

If you actually care about learning languages, I've given you enough material to last you at least 12 months of 8 hours a day studying.  Michel Thomas, then Auralog then Rosetta stone; that order.

This curriculum works with any of the romance languages (or german or english) btw, there are programs for each.

Spanish has obvious benefits, especially if you live in the Western hemisphere.

Otherwise I would say Chinese, but they seem to be able to learn Engrish so maybe it doesn't matter. Let them do the studying. And the manufacturing. And increasingly, the engineering and programming. we'll make great pets.

Japanese is supposedly easy to learn how to speak. But one of the most crazy difficult to master the written language.

theres three alphbets one is literaly english abc's but with japanese characters so japanese people can write western words. the other is basically the japanese abc's for there tradistional words and the last is like the chinese alphabet where each character is a word...thats the hard one to learn cuz its like 10000 diff charaters they all look almost the same only slightlt differnt and hard as hell to draw

i say it depends where you want to travel.. anywhere in the western hemisphere Spanish will help you out. Spanish is pretty ubiquitous here with the exception of Brazil.

Mandarin may help if you are heading east but honestly, i dont know how much you would really benefit.. there are so many variations on asian languages id assume no matter what you are going to run into some barrier.

It really depends on where abouts you would like to travel. I am not sure if this is true. But i have heard once you learn french, it is fairly easy to learn Spanish. So that could really open your traveling possibilities,
