Matter changes form when observed??
    #13574666 -

I was reading about this somewhere and cannot find what Im looking for now.
Wanted to read up on this stuff again. Anyone know of a good source??

When watching The Spirit Molecule last night a women said....
"consciousness is primary in the universe and matter is the result of"

Made me think of said topic.

It has been stated in Buddhist writings that the observer changes the properties of the observed.

Let me see if I can find the exact passage...

--------------------
External control, are you gonna let them get you?
Do you wanna be a prisoner in the boundaries they set you?
You say you want to be yourself, do you think they'll let you?
They're out to get you.

In physics, it is known as the "observer effect."

I won't attempt to explain it, but you can find good stuff on Wikipedia or via a Google search.

Wave function collapse - Wikipedia
Quote:
In quantum mechanics, wave function collapse (also called collapse of the state vector or reduction of the wave packet) is the process by which a wave function—initially in a superposition of different eigenstates—appears to reduce to a single one of the states after interaction with an observer. In simplified terms, it is the condensation of physical possibilities into a single occurrence, as seen by an observer. It is one of two processes by which quantum systems evolve in time according to the laws of quantum mechanics as presented by John von Neumann. The reality of wave function collapse has always been debated, i.e., whether it is a fundamental physical phenomenon in its own right or just an epiphenomenon of another process, such as quantum decoherence. In recent decades the quantum decoherence view has gained popularity. Collapse may be understood as a change in conditional probabilities.

I was peaking on shrooms one time, thirsty as fuck when i grab a water bottle and finish all the water inside.

Then, still thirsty, i begin to think about MAKING more water. I imagine the tiny water molecules that are left in the bottle duplicating and making more and more H2O.

Then,im sure it was just the mushrooms, but i begin to see drops of water accumulating in the bottle!!
Then i get freaked out and a big sense of evil comes over me and i throw the bottle across the room!

So is it possible i really was making water right before my eyes!?:strokebeard:

Here we are.

"Within the last century, Western science and physics have made a startling discovery. We are part of the world we view. The very process of our observation changes the things we observe. As an example, an electron is an extremely tiny item. It cannot be viewed without instrumentation, and that apparatus dictates what the observer will see. If you look at an electron in one way, it appears to be a particle, a hard little ball that bounces around in nice straight paths. When you view it another way, an electron appears to be a wave form, with nothing solid about it. It glows and wiggles all over the place. An electron is an event more than a thing. And the observer participates in that event by the very process of his or her observation. There is no way to avoid this interaction."

Poid, when I read this thread and saw your video that is exactly the demonstration I was thinking of.

That segment is from a movie entitled "What the Bleep Do We Know Anyway" and there is another movie (I'm not really sure of the difference, I think one is original the other is extended) that is "What the Bleep: down the Rabbit Hole"

Lots of talking head talking about some cool things, but there's also some straight up bull SHIT on that DVD; for instance, that blonde woman that channels Ramza or whatever (lol final fantasy tactics).

ANyway, that demonstration is so incredible and does a great job of explaining what happens when scientists obvserve phenomena and what that means.

Ok, just finally got around to watching this. I felt like a child while viewing
this video because the video itself breaks the information down in a way like ur
watching Bill Nye the science guy

Anyways lol, it really is mind boggling how this universe works and that
we are even part of something like it. You go to sleep and then wake up
as this conscious being that lives on a almost perfectly spherical rock
spinning in one of billions of galaxy's that are floating in space.
Fuck.

Lol deadhearts, thanks for bringing me back to that "what are we doing here, what are we, what is this all for?" place again.

The universe is a vast undulating mystery. It is quite exciting to ponder it. I'm glad that I've given up hope of ever "figuring it out" beyond the fact that the illusion of separation only serves the purpose of objective observation. When I'm looking at the clouds or the sun and pondering their existence, I'm really just looking in a crazy, crazy mirror.

As to why this is, that is unknowable.

didn't read all the post but isnt this basically quantum mechanic's or quantum physics? read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-slit_experiment.
there are tons of good articles that explain it in lanuage that most people can understand, i had to re-read each paragraph like 3 times over for it to kinda sink in though.

there are a lot of amazing thangs happening all the time. as a scientist, i stay skeptical, and some of this shit is so beyond belief yet empirically proven that it blows my mind constantly. but of course then there are films like "what the bleep do we know" to remind us that the line between science, philosophy, metaphysics, and bullshit is incredibly thin.
