Do you ever just want to go AWOL?
    #13445509 -

I have to admit this is my fantasy and has been for quite some time.  Basically, saying "peace out" to everyone you know and disappearing for awhile, perhaps forever; preferably to some tropical island.

I just want to take off and truly start over. I want to cut all ties with everyone I know and just leave.

But it's so hard to do.

But I feel like it's inevitable that one day I will be pushed to this point...until then, I'm biding my time.

I went awol just before 9 11 and I hitchiked around for a bit.  It sux unless you have a support structure. The streets are lame.  I was raisedwith a percieved  idea of hippie culture but by the time I got on the scene, all that was left was drug addcts...  If you go awol, hit the wilderness.  Just head north not south.  Mexico :tinfoil:

Yes, I want to do that all the time.
Then, like you, it just feels too hard to do. I know it's the only way to solve my problems with life, but at the same time I would miss it all. It's pretty paradoxical.

do it.  it is the best thing that would ever happen.

I did it once.  i remember packing and leaving and running out of gas in Dylan, MT and slept in the parking lot of a hotel because i had no money.  I called my parents in the morning to see if they would put gas in my truck to come home, which they did.  I then continued west ( i live east of Dylan, MT) and ran out of gas again in Spokane, WA.

Borrowed some money, and stayed in a hotel for about a month and a half.  applied for fasfa and went to college their for the next 2 years.

when i came back i was a completely different person.  quit drinking and smoking pot for awhile.  got my life in line.  was no longer a jackass to police running around with warrants all the time. etc...

I'd likely go to a tropical place, but not Mexico.

Yeah, it probably does suck without a support structure, but at the same time, I really want to experience this type of extreme change one day.

I just want to be properly prepared, so that I don't crash and burn.  No limping back.

You guys are awesome.  Thanks for the feedback...feel free to share your experiences in going AWOL.  Just fucking saying, "peace out" and going.  That's my dream.  I feel like it'll happen.  I have to do it alone, though, and I won't be able to tell anyone before I do it.  Every time I tell someone my AWOL plans, they try to get in on them, but then it's not going AWOL like how I envision it.

I don't want to do this to hurt anyone; but to help myself.  Going AWOL is all about me.  Maybe that's selfish, but I can afford to be selfish right now.

I feel like I need this experience like I need to breathe...make sense?

Wow, thanks for the encouragement, man.  I am going to do this.  I just have to be ready.  What makes it really difficult to just leave is that I have a dog who is my best friend (practically my child) and the thought of leaving him behind is hard.  I feel like if I didn't have a dog I'd be long gone already.

i have also felt this way for a while now, but i feel the need to move into the rainforest,or somewhere like that, with the natives . ,that would be cool to me ,. i am not sure if it would be in the long term though.

I think I'm right there with you, actually, I've been planning on hopping a train this summer and riding to somewhere in Canada.

I have a partner and I do love him but I feel like he doesn't understand completely that I am a free soul and need to totally go nuts sometimes and get away in the most radical way possible.  My biggest challenge will be preparing for my AWOL adventure without informing him.  My plan is to ready myself...and then just go.  Probably by this summer.

It's weird...I have a real focus on taking care of myself and my dreams before anyone elses.  I don't even feel selfish.  It feels like the way it needs to be for my own sake.

I hope you're planning on at least leaving a note on your way out. I know it would scare me shitless if my partner just up and left without a trace. As free as you are, there's always that one little thread tying you to your life.

I definitely will.  I'll leave a note, but I won't say where I'm going, for obvious reasons.  He's the type to track me down.

I'm worried that unless I do this soon, I'll never get the chance.  I can feel responsibilities piling up on the horizon; the longer I stay attached and bonded to certain people, the more heavy the attachment gets.
