Ptown halloween walkabout - Shaggy Parasols and a Agaricus - Campestris?
    #13416173 -

I hope it's ok to post these without a full ID request; I've got good pictures and alot of mushrooms. I've got what I'm pretty positive is chlorophyllum racodes (they stained red/orange and it seems late for molydbites) and an agaricus that didn't stain yellow and has wine colored gills. I also found something that is pretty rare for Ptown...

So if I can get a id confirm on the shaggy's and the Agaricus, it'd be much appreciated. I have alot of the Agaricus, so I'd like to confirm they're good eating. I didn't notice any/much bruising on them.

Ah! Gotcha. No, those are Cyans. Grazie!

My agaricus have a definite ring on the stem. They don't stink, but i'm not sure whether I have something like subrutilescens or rather hondensis.

TI por favor!

I agree with what Joie has suggested.

A. Silvaticus looks pretty much exact, one issue though - no bruising/blushing reaction or if there is it is very hard to detect. Perhaps a slight pinkish-ness

The smell is very mild, almost undetectable.

I'm leaning towards A. Hondensis (which is poisonous)
edit: no yellow bruising though
further edit: spore print was brown as expected

Thoughts?
Basically I'm between Silvaticus and Hondensis with no way to be sure.

sorry to be impatient, but the alternatives are eating and enjoying or getting painfully sick for a day or two. Thanks.

If the Agaricus doesn't smell like ink then eating it won't make you sick.

:whathesaid:  If they don't stain yellow and don't smell phenolic now or whilst cooking you can rule that out.  Not sure why you think A. hondensis.

LOL I wish I knew what Ink smelled like. I'm sort of thinking Hondensis because they look alike to me and these aren't staining red.

I guess I'll cook them and see if they stink. Thanks guys. Sorry to be a pain.

With Agaricus I find that most of the phenolic odor comes from the base of the stem. Cut it with a knife and stick your nose right in there. It is an inky, musty, almost chemical smell... like artist's paint or something. I have never cooked a poisonous agaricus so don't know if they will emit a scent that way.

Those look good to eat IMO... but not nearly as good as almond agaricus (a. augustus or a. subfruscens)... hehe. I am so lucky to have too many to eat in my spots. I've had to dry about 5 pounds of them! Where were your agaricus growing? Duff? Maybe you can find some almonds!

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

Thanks Cameal! They were in a few different places, all in fairy ring like arrangements around conifers in lawns/park areas in urban portland. How do you like to cook your Agaricus?

Any tips on cooking the shaggy parasols?

Shaggy parasols... I love to eggwash them and coat them in panko and fry. They have such a warm flavour- almost caramelized. They are good broiled with olive oil too.

The other day I made an almond agaricus bruschetta- chopped up and sauteed in garlic butter, then deglazed with some wine and fresh herbs. Topped with fig chevre (rehydrated dried figs combined with fresh goat cheese), crema di balsamico (or any nice, sweet balsamic) and a sprinkle of fresh parmesan. This on sourdough toast points or french bread is divine. The figs play so nicely with the vinegar and with almond agaricus it tastes like I've sprinkled nuts all over it (which would be a nice addition, actually).

I have no pictures of this recipe. It sucks because I cook in the evening when the light is gone so the photos always turn out like garbage.
