The backpack speech
    #13387979 -

Was watching a movie called Up In The Air. Was a shit movie for the most part, but it had an interesting speech in it.  This thread is about that speech.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

How much does your life weigh? Imagine for a second you are carrying a backpack. I want you to pack it with all the stuff you have in your life and start with the little things the shelves, the drawers, the nicknacks: then start adding larger stuff, clothes, tabletop appliances, lamps, your TV – backpack should be getting pretty heavy now – and you go bigger. Your couch, your car, your home – I want you to stuff it all into that backpack.

Now i want you to fill it with people. Start with casual acquaintances, friends of friends, folks around the office, and then you move to the people that you trust with your most intimate secrets, your brothers and sisters, your children, parents, and finally your husband, wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend – and get ‘em into that backpack – feel the weight of that bag. Make no mistake; your relationships are your heaviest components in your life. all those negotiations and arguments and secrets are compromising. The slower we move, the faster we die. Make no mistake, moving is living.

-------------------------------------------

Your thoughts?  How much does your backpack weigh?  Are the things in your backpack beneficial to you or burdensome?  What are some things you know you should take out?

So the argument being that having no possessions or friends/loved ones will somehow make you move faster through life while considerably extending it?

Nah, i know its prob a metaphor for something like not getting caught up in the little things are keeping an eye on the big picture of the journey instead, but i dont think its a very good one.

It eludes to a few things that give it some merit.  The things we have possessing ownership over us and sometimes getting in the way.  Relationships especially.  Not that we shouldn't have any of it, but it's healthy to clean house and assess what really needs to be toted around with us.

How often have you found  yourself questioning whether a relationship or possession is worth the burden?

I believe you need some responsibility or accountability and that having that 'weight' is a necessity if you expect to find any kind of meaning in life.

It's nothing to live by, I just found it thought provoking.
