SATA cable quality- Worth considering?
    #13383401 -

Hi, I'm going to buy some SATA cables for SATA II HDD's (consumer grade drives used for storage, possibly operating system) and upon encountering $0.99 USD cables on ebay (beats the $20.00 Best Buy wanted for one standard cable...), which includes shipping from China as well as eBay and Paypal's vigorish, I began to wonder whether I should be concerned with the quality of the SATA cables I buy?

I bought some cheapo 4-pin to SATA power plug adapters from this source as I figured it would be hard to screw up power cables that much and still have them function, but the data cable had me thinking...

So, what do you guys think?  Any experience with this one way or the other?

If the quality is something to be concerned with, how should I go about finding decent quality cables?  They all look the same, so I don't know how to make sure the six dollar cable I buy at shop B isn't just the 10 cent cable from shop A at a higher price...

Thanks!

Well, the best SATA cables ive used are the ones with the metal clips on the end to release it.

The cheapies work sure, but if your opening your computer on a regular basis, or using the cable externally perhaps to a USB adapter, you will notice the cheap plastic cables breaking fairly quickly!

Likewise if you cram a cable in there, bend it over to lay somewhat flat so you can close your high-end computer case!  It works fine for many months, then suddenly it can't boot.....  Open it and find the connector end cracked... ah nuts (grabs another unused cable w/ metal clip from some nice motherboard kits @ work)

Personally, as long as the cable meets the specification, I go with the cheaper ones.  I've only had a few SATA cables go bad, over the years, and expensive vs cheap didn't seem to make a difference on reliability.  As often as not, the expensive cables came from the same source as the cheaper cables, but have a nice and expensive corporate logo applied to add some value.
