science fiction books

ive been getting into reading alot lately. i need some more science fiction books though,
i just finished reading the hitchhikers guide to the universe, and am going to pick up the second book today. i also just read war of the worlds which was amazing. so im wondering what else should i read?

Man there is so much good stuff out there, old and new. Try William Gibson's Neuromancer I would say, for starters.

Lately I have been into Greg Bear, Stephen Baxter among more recent authors. Drifting slightly from the pure sci-fi genre would be Octavia Butler, a great writer of speculative fiction. Philip K Dick of course.

I enjoy vintage science fiction a lot too. Dune = #1. Ringworld, The Mote in God's Eye, Farnham's Freehold . . . could go on forever.
Or just go by authors: Asimov, Niven, Heinelin, Sagan, Clarke,  Ursula K. Le Guin , Orson Scott Card . . .

Look for Hugo award winners, Nebula award winners from over the years This will point you to some great science fiction.

i'm reading this right now and was going to recommend it.  it's good shit.  interesting too.  the style of writing makes me think of like 50's film noir detective movies or something.

i'd like to add samuel r. delany to that list of your antiPock.  he's got some really fantastic and intelligent sci-fi.

i personally have a thing for apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic fiction (which often fits into the category of sci-fi).  some books from this genre than i can recommend:
The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham
World War Z by Max Brooks
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. ***cannot suggest this one highly enough***
Earth Abides by George R. Stewart

i'm hung over right now though.  and this is all the effort i feel like putting into this post.  i'll post if i remember more titles.

'the culture cycle' by iain m. banks is the best sci fi i've ever read, and i grew up reading sci fi. here's an essay about the world in which the culture novels are set. no spoilers.

I like all the ones mentioned here - Neuromancer, Dune, Hyperion.  Foundations trilogy is good and epic.  Arthur Clarke stuff is great, like Childhood's End or City and the Stars.  Planet of the Apes is good, its a bit different than the movie.

Heirs of Empire by David Weber. I can only barely remember what the book was even about, but I do remember loving it when I maybe 18 or 19.

i recall reading somewhere that ryan phillipe's company is adapting 'nueromancer' but haven't really heard much else about it. that's one that they just cannot screw up, but i think phillipe takes it seriously from what i gathered.
