Squatting
    #13366578 -

aka the legal occupation of abandoned properties.

Quite a big phenomenon here amongst the psy / free party scene. Me and crew are moving into our winter squat soon and are throwing a massive free halloween psy party in there. Feels sorta like fight club.. except we're moving into a giant warehouse with off the grid electricity muahaha.

Just wondered if any of you guys do anything similar?

Sounds like fun.

It is legal to occupy an abandoned building?

Well it is as long as you don't force entry and its not currently occupied.. whack yer section 6 notice on the door and secure the building and you're good to go :yesnod:.

Well at least that's how its done here, not sure about other countries.

That sounds fucking awesome. I'd love to get down in an abandoned building or warehouse.

Where you from Cepheus?

Guessing the UK or somewhere in Europe. I know England has some crazy laws where you can or almost can loose your house if you leave for to long. I forget, my aunt was telling me about it.

That or Detroit.

Yeah UK. As for the definition of abandoned.. well if the building is clearly not lived in by someone and unsecured (i.e we can walk in through the front door & change the locks / board up the windows).. then its ours :yesnod:.

Last year we had a 10 bedroom mansion w/ electricity and running water. Got evicted around Christmas time (largely due to "stealing" electricity & water).

Tend to favour warehouses though, because our economy is going to shit and we can throw giant psy parties in 'em. Last one the police turned up in force.. we sent out our negotiator, locked the doors and turned up the music.. we were a good 300 people strong though, so not much they can do :yesnod:.

It is illegal in many places here, but it didnt stop me from doing it.
In some states its legal after the first year and you own it.
In some states you can be prosecuted even if you didnt force entry.

wait, so you can legally squat but if the owners come back you have to leave? Get in trouble? Can stay and the previous owners can get fucked? hows it work? I think a similar law should be applied to all the forclosed homes in america, I mean if its never going to be lived in why not home the homeless or something, shit. makes no sense having an entire suburb empty and blocks of forclosed homes.

There is a trick in California for just that. If I remember right if a property is abandoned for x years you can claim it and move into it. Then you have to pay property taxes on it. Something like that and this was from over a decade ago I heard this so...?

Ah I just heard if you live on  abandoned property for 7 years you can then file a claim. If there is no dispute then you can have it. Property taxes come in there somewhere, maybe after?

That sounds like a hell of a time! I'm going to have to check out the laws on that around here... I'd love to find some likeminded individuals and squat a summer/throw massive parties at an abandoned factory or something of the likes... there are entire neighborhoods of them around here :awebig:

So how did that situation turn out? Did the cops end up leaving y'all to party?

they usually do, otherwise they wont even bother talking, they will just storm the place and arrest accordingly.

Yeah they initially said they were gonna search every car that turned up for the party, but a big swarm of people turned up all of a sudden so they just gave up and left.

We had an 8kW sound system in there with lasers, smoke machines and the likes hah. Next party will be bigger and better.

This is just as it was warming up :yesnod::

Really surprised this kind of shit doesn't happen over there .

Why be surprised...when your live somewhere where your next leader is based on whoever pops out of your current leaders beav, it seems only obvious that things might be just a tad bit more lax...no?
