Vladimir Lenin, King Tut and the McDonald's Happy Meal: What do they all have in common? A shocking resistance to Mother Nature's cycle of decomposition and biodegradability, apparently.

That's the disturbing point brought home by the latest project of New York City-based artist and photographer Sally Davies, who bought a McDonald's Happy Meal back in April and left it out in her kitchen to see how well it would hold up over time.

The results? "The only change that I can see is that it has become hard as a rock," Davies told the U.K. Daily Mail.

She proceeded to photograph the Happy Meal each week and posted the pictures to Flickr to record the results of her experiment. Now, just over six months later, the Happy Meal has yet to even grow mold. She told the Daily Mail that "the food is plastic to the touch and has an acrylic sheen to it."




Davies -- whose art has been featured in numerous films and television shows and is collected by several celebrities -- told The Upshot that she initiated the project to prove a friend wrong. He believed that any burger would mold or rot within two or three days of being left on a counter. Thus began what's become known as "The Happy Meal Art Project."



"I told my friend about a schoolteacher who's kept a McDonald's burger for 12 years that hasn't changed at all, and he didn't believe me when I told him about it," Davies told us. "He thought I was crazy and said I shouldn't believe everything that I read, so I decided to try it myself."

And that is why on a long road trip you can buy 20 cheese burger and eat them over the next couple days :thumbup:

I tried eating McDonald's the other day and I don't get how people can do it. I used to eat it when I was younger but honestly, it's the worst fast food you can buy.

Not surprised since two McDonald's double cheeseburgers will make me feel like I dumped a box of salt down my throat. If I had a pile of salt on my kitchen counter, it wouldn't biodegrade either.

Yeah, I don't think I can go to McDonald's or Jack in the Box anymore. I like In-N-Out and Sonic better. Del Taco's burgers are slightly better too, even though I don't really like their Mexican food.

Should do a comparison of several chains, leaving them all out on the counter.

Yeah the last couple of times I thought a burger from one of those places sounded good, I got about half way through and thought, meh... oh hey I can feel my heart.

I just can't eat the stuff much anymore. I do like the breakfast food though. It seems once you stop eating it, it is hard to come back to it.

im pretty sure that anybody who has ever spilled fries in their car already knows this.  you clean under your seats some months or years later and see what appears to be a perfectly fresh fry, yet you havent been to mcDs in a hell of a long time...

The other weird thing is that even though it's horrible, once you get used to it, it's addictive. I used to have this thing where whenever I was sick, I'd go get a Big Mac. Maybe I innately wanted it for it's preservative and anti-aging qualities. :lol:

I wonder what a normal fully-cooked burger of a similar size would do in the same condition.

Honestly if you keep a clean kitchen I think most salted and cooked foods would hold up surprisingly well. What's supposed to decompose it?

The idea that your kitchen can be sterile is a lie from people trying to sell you fancy soap.  There are mold spores EVERYWHERE and we're all covered in bacteria, yeasts, and other fungi.

The level of salt needed to really preserve something (without drying it or smoking it) is pretty serious.
