a few networking questions
    #13257403 -

if you have the time to answer great, if not oh well thanks anyways

1) does deploying an image work without a flaw? from what I know it's as simple as taking an existing installation and creating an image of it, then deploying it as is. therefore all the drivers are installed etc. what about the installation code? what are the legal issues of deploying an image? I'm guessing in a business work environment you could get sued for deploying an image to every single computer because you'd be therefore copying an installation code, unless it was linux of course. correct?

2) is compressing a windows image as simple as using a command window and running /split after imagex.exe? is this the most efficient method I can't just zip it can I?

3) I can use policy settings to prevent devices from being connected to a computer that aren't approved while someone is not attending a computer correct? what identifies which devices can connect and which can't?

4) importing root certificates simple enough? don't worry about this I'll get to it later. Most of the questions I'm asking at this point are hypothetical until later. I'm guessing importing it is simple but is there a limit and if so how do I step around limited rules or are there any?

5) what is a dynamic disk? I know this is a question I should look up, but is a dynamic disk raid, an extended disk outside the tower, or another partition? I'm guessing dynamic is more raid than it is some type of virtual disk, in which case I'm sure it would be called a virtual disk. as far as I know a virtual pc is great for running an application off a pc's hardware inside an os already, or running a server off a non server pc or several applications on one server, but not for creating another partition on an existing os, which sounds redundant. stop me if I'm moving way out in left field.

6) raid 1 is simply mirroring two drives correct? I heard raid 9 or 10 was the best as it was fast and most reliable and backup safe, but then I heard raid 6 worked the best, as this is what I read:

Block-level striping with double distributed parity.

Provides fault tolerance from two drive failures; array continues to operate with up to two failed drives. This makes larger RAID groups more practical, especially for high-availability systems. This becomes increasingly important as large-capacity drives lengthen the time needed to recover from the failure of a single drive. Single-parity RAID levels are as vulnerable to data loss as a RAID 0 array until the failed drive is replaced and its data rebuilt; the larger the drive, the longer the rebuild will take. Double parity gives time to rebuild the array without the data being at risk if a single additional drive fails before the rebuild is complete.

thanks for reading

some people say if you can do a full trace it doesn't mean the server isn't too secure necessarily. From other people I've heard if you can do a full public trace that security is completely hackable. Not that I care really ok thanks

> 1) does deploying an image work without a flaw?

In general, you will still need to do some minor OS configurations for each machine... changing the name of each installed machine, etc.

> 2) & 3) & 4) ... in Windows ...

Donno... I don't do Windows.

> 5) what is a dynamic disk?

In Microsoft's world, you have Basic Disks and Dynamic Disks.  Basic disks are MSDOS compliant.  Dynamic disks store additional information about the disk allowing for more complex configurations (such as RAID, striping) and runtime volume management.  (OK, so I do a little windows from time to time... bleck, I feel dirty now.)

> 6) raid 1 is simply mirroring two drives correct?

Almost.  It is mirroring of two RAID volumes.  Usually a RAID volume and a disk are the same thing.  Don't confuse a RAID volume with a Microsoft Volume; these are different.

> I heard raid 9 or 10 was the best as it was fast and most reliable and backup safe

I don't know that there is a "best".  I've also never heard of RAID 9 while RAID 10 should really be written as RAID 1+0 rather than "ten".

The reason there is no "best" is because different RAID versions have different pros and cons.  Depending upon what you want from the array, the "best" will change.  For example, RAID 1 has very fast read times, but has a large overhead.  RAID 0 is very fast on both reads and writes, does not have a large overhead, but also has no redundancy.  RAID 1+0 performs well when one of disks fails, but is complex to configure (compared to plain 0 and 1) and has a larger overhead (requires four disks, typically).  RAID 5 is a good compromise between efficiency, overhead, complexity, and speed.  If you have larger disks in the array, then RAID 6 becomes important as it provides redundancy for a two disk failure, continuing to provide protection even if one disk in the array dies while waiting for the array to rebuild on a spare drive.  The downside to RAID 5 and RAID 6 occurs on writes; parity must be calculated and data+parity must be striped across all of the drives in the array.

thank you very much suess.

with image deployment I thought that each computer name was automatically generated? do you always deploy an image through a server or can you deploy it from a usb as well? I'm guessing this would create a few different configuration settings. as far as I know though an image doesn't keep ip config information or the pc host name. I could be wrong, but this is to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks a bunch I'm a pc newbie like anyone else, oh well I'm learning

> with image deployment I thought that each computer name was automatically generated?

Again, I am speaking in general terms, not specific to any platform.  In general, an image is a clone of some master machine, including all configurations.  At some point, the configuration of any machine cloned from the image must be updated to differentiate the various clones.  Depending upon the platform (OS/software) that you are using, this may be automated.  In a netboot environment, the system might be setup to use the MAC address of the booting machine to index the proper configuration data to install during boot.  However, if you are installing a bunch of machines from a static image (such as a DVD), then you will probably need to go in and touch up the configurations by hand.  Again, a lot depends upon the OS/software being used.

I see.

in your experience do you like image deployment? and if done with a dvd instead of server deployment is it really faster than just installing with the os disk?

what is the legality of a system image? how does the product key and all that fit into how it works?

i guess with linux it wouldn't matter. Oh well whatever thanks for the input. I might never capture an image but now if I do I know my way around it a little better.

anyone know anything about this?

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/09/24/how-to-backup-and-restore-windows-7-and-server-2008-r2-activation-status-activate-offline-on-reinstall/

here is another good question, I was looking at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTLM

and noticed it doesn't support cryptographic methods

wtf? something that advanced stops i.p. spoofing but doesn't support efs or bit locker or other file encryption methods? Wow

btw is any of this legit?

1) As was said deploying an image works pretty much how you described but you will need to change a few things think the computer name and it's network address. I would advise writing a script for it if you're planning on doing so on a LOT of computers. Cleverly, you could just be placing a reference file on a server for your script to draw the name and IP from, then have the script increment it.

2) I'm really not quite sure what you're asking... What are you compressing it for? If you just wanna throw it on an external drive for use on an already formatted computer.. then sure you can zip it up.
For installation there's no real need for anything to be compressed as it's going be unpacked anyway. Creating an ISO is a good option for storage though. You'll need to create some sort of installation media on which you'll be unpacking the image if it's compressed or simply moving the files to it. I imagine you'll have to add the correct bootsect to your media.

3) Yes, but you'll have to do a little learning yourself. It's kind of beyond the scope of what i'm willing to type :-P

4) It's easy.

5 & 6) I'm not the guy to ask for that, most of my education focused on programming.

awesome, so you can zip an os, and it will unpack upon install. i thought before you wrote it to the cd you'd have to unzip it. so you can zip an os to a usb and install like that? doesn't sound right, but i'm not argueing yet. I was pretty sure you couldn't, but I can't remember clearly trying that method so I won't argue.

here is a good question. My friend has a computer with a hard disk, the hard disk isn't ide so no need to set jumper to cable select. the ram is fine, motherboard seems fine. whenever he tries to install windows, it says it can't detect hard disk. I keep telling him to look at startup menu, and he says 'it's set to boot from cd, otherwise it wouldn't show the partitions.' so he can get as far as formattting and choosing to install, but then it says it can't detect hard disk.

i'm thinking if he looks at boot/startup - not f12 but f2, maybe he has a different disk set to read, or maybe some raid configuration enabled. he should mess around with that and see if he can enable the correct disk to read from - idk i could be wrong.

my question, how do you run a chkdsk from startup with no os installed?

thanks

(btw don't answer if you don't want to, i know it's a dumb question, you need a boot disk. Anyway, just in case you could run a cmd or a shell at startup to run chkdsk instead of burning a disk, for what if you don't have an os and working cd-rom to burn a disk from? but more an emergency question if the answer is ridiculous or redundant go ahead and skip the question)

Is he trying to install windows XP?  If so, some of the earlier versions of XP did not recognize SATA hard disks during the install.  Slipstream SP3 onto an XP install disk to get around the issue.

wow, that might be it. he finally used a different version of windows xp, a later one. incredible information.

what do i need to burn to cd to run a chkdsk on a hard disk drive from start up with operating system installed? lol and what do in download to burn the cd again?

lol i know stupid questions, just if you have any really good information offhand, i'd appreciate it.

While your friend is at it, tell him to slipstream the rest of his drivers into his installation. I believe the software he'd want is Windows NLite

Why would you wanna run checkdisk?

sorry if my other post confused you, no you can't just zip up the OS and put it on a CD. You're going to need to create an ISO image or obtain one. Then you'll have to expand the ISO onto some sort of removable media.
It is possible to create an image from an existing installation but it's a major pain in the butt. You're better off just backing up your data and reinstalling the OS.

Re: a few networking questions [Re: anarchOi]

yeah, i tried burning an iso a few times with iso burner but it never worked out right. you can download a boot disk as an iso, but i believe it's always zipped. a zipped iso i believe.

no he worked it out. and chkdsk is always good to check a hard disk drive. i don't know what solid state uses, but i'd run chkdsk twice on a usb and a hard disk, because why waste money on something like a new graphics card, new cpu, new ram, new motherboard, then go through all the trouble to put it together, find out if you bought the wrong parts, return the parts, etc. find out your socket type for the drivers, just to have a bad hard drive. and it's always important to find out if your motherboard supports both ide or sata or just one and which one, OBVIOUSLY.

ok if i sound like a broken record sorry. but to me booting up a disk and running chk dsk before you install an os will always save you the time of finding out you did  a bad os installation. finding out you think that your product key code isn't working. or doing some weird system repair garbage or reinstalling windows over and over, just to have a bad sector on the hard disk in the first place.

has chk dsk been know to not read a hard disk right and tell you it's bad? but you have to burn a boot disk as in iso as well right? still, whoever invented the boot menu is a moron to not include a way to run chkdsk from boot menu without an os. i mean why wouldn't you be able to?

sounds retarded to wrack myself over a reason they wouldn't throw that in there.
thanks for reading my rant.
