synchronicity vs coincidence
    #13255655 -

the word "synchronicity" gets thrown around a lot, and i'd like to speak on that briefly

the meaning of the word synchronicity, as i understand it, is "an acausal coincidence of significant meaning"

an example of synchronicity in my own life:
a friend and i had split the price of a nice bong
some weeks later, we were smoking at his apartment
i left at around 10:30 PM, and he kept the bong
during the course of the night, i had a dream in which i decided to wash the bong
in doing so, the downstem slipped from my hands into the sink and broke
i woke up distraught, feeling as though this had actually happened, though "knowing" that it hadn't
i went about my day, with concern for our bong still nagging me
at about 4:00 PM i met up with my friend
and he informed me that at roughly 1:30 AM the night before, he had washed the bong
and dropped the downstem in his sink, breaking it

i believe this qualifies as synchronicity because my dream had meaningful (in fact, accurate) content, and it was (as far as standard conceptions of physics are concerned) not causally related to the breaking of the bong (it was a coincidence)

an example of NOT synchronicity, from a different friend:
some weeks ago, he wrote a poem/rap referencing centaurs
today, he read a book which referenced centaurs
he got on facebook and was like "omg! synchronicity!"

this does not qualify
though indeed his writing the word "centaur" did not cause the same word to appear in a book (it was acausal), the coincidence had no content, and therefore no meaning

i think synchronicity is a real phenomenon (obviously, seeing as it's happened to me), and it's one that i wish could be discussed with rigor, but it seems to me that most people have such a loose definition of the word that there is no agreed-upon basis for determining synchronicity from mere interesting coincidence

in fact, many would argue that there IS no difference between synchronicity and mere interesting coincidence
though intuitively this veiwpoint feels wrong to me, i admit that i cannot counter it logically, partly because the concept of synchronicity is so ill-defined

so -- can we more tightly define the term?
how do you define synchronicity?
what synchronicities have you experienced?
which things, in your opinion, are NOT synchronicities?

and if you do not believe in synchronicity, how do you interpret occurrences like my dream mentioned above?

Nuff said. As to your intuitive feelings check out Diploid's thread on "How intuition can be wrong" in that "other" forum.

When I think of synchronicity the word synchronizing comes to mind.

I've never really thought about the difference between synchronicities and coincidences...

Idk honestly this is tough. I guess synchronicities for me are something which correlate between the internal world and the external world. Where as coincidences only lie in the external world.

Thinking about something happening and then having it happen in real life would be a synchronicity for me.

Where as seeing someone from the neighborhood in Disney land would be a coincidence.

I interpret occurences like your dream mentioned above as being your brains 'most likely to happen negative guess' based off of previous knowledge or experience which remains unconscious

Such occurrences don't fit into his model of reality - therefore they are dismissed a 'mere coincidence'. I have experienced such profound synchronicity which has led me to conclude that the Universe is interactive, or interconnected to our consciousness.

Here is an example that really touched me. I grew up with a stutter that gave me a lot of anxiety in a few acute areas of my life, one being talking on the telephone. I was sitting in my room and I had to call Netflix to tell them that one of my movies had came damaged. I decided to "dive into my fear" with a positive attitude. I ended up speaking perfectly fluent. This was an obstacle that may seem trivial to some, but it left me feeling exhilarated. I was so high on life, I went downstairs to tell my parents about this whole "positive outlook" thing I had discovered. I walking into the den and my parents were watching Larry King - the theme of the show was the law of attraction, using a positive attitude to manifest change in your life, etc. I was amazed by this synchronistic occurrence, for as I'm sure you know this mystical stuff is rarely, if ever on TV.

Another experience involved me having an intense dream that I was a polar bear surrounded by an array of other bears. I woke up from this dream with an intense feeling - It was like an initiation dream and connection with a "power animal" or "spirit guide." After I woke up, I went downstairs to grab some breakfast. Lo and behold my Dad was watching an animal special on polar bears.

Sometimes when I walk past random strangers the sentence I overhear pertains exactly to some sort of esoteric thought I was seeking an answer to. Author Robert Moss calls this the "every day oracle."

Coincidence. How many dreams don't come true?

to conclude that the Universe is interactive, or interconnected to our consciousness.

I actually believe this also.  Take the placebo effect. Very powerful and real imo.

Doesn't mean the universe is all inclusively conscious however or that the process is happening outside of ourselves on any grand scale.

For me, synchronicity came across more as:

I look back on my life... which the logical mind would view as a culmination of random events.

I take some mushies.

I realize that there is not a grain of sand that is out of place in the world.

My conclusion is that synchronicity takes place continuously, non-stop. It really all boils down to our ability to recognize and perceive the synchronicity that exists everywhere.

That might be a wrong, of course.

Synchronicity is a coincidence with a little arrogance injected. It's taking a chance event and seeing it as this magical phenomenon centered around you.

True in a sense, but what if synchronicity applies to every being in creation equally?

You can't have 'my' life full of synchronicity, but yours is just coincidence, its all or nothing

Its like saying everything in 'my' life is interconnected, but yours is still all separate, that would be impossible

Which is more likely? Coincidence is a sufficient explanation, why add a layer of complexity and spookiness over it?

I don't really see it as spookyness, just how the universe actually functions
Some things are just undeniable that life is giving you signs of your fate, not just mere coincidences

It all depends on if you believe yourself to have free will though, if you feel you are the controller of your destiny
I feel as though every moment of my life is destined, including me typing this, or picking my nose

Its the energy of the universe just functioning as it will, to say 'I' do it, to me, is arrogance
Things simply happen, believed ownership over 'the happening' is all due to fear of losing the happening

I tend to agree with this

Synchronicities are coincidences,

they just aren't and shouldn't be shrugged off as 'mere coincidence'

Anyway,

Coincidentally, I had a dream about synchronicity last night.
Basically a bunch of people talked about thangs, and then thangs happened about what they were talking about instantly, and I told them "See? Thats a synchronous thang" and it happened a few times.

Other than that, IDK.

It happens all the time for me, and it shows me that there is some sort of order in chaos.

I could recall many synchronous moments that have happened in my life, but whats the point?

Only for someone to read it and either believe me or not?

Well I think I'm gonna go and do different thangs. :feelsgoodman:

Give an example of one of these undeniable events that cannot be explained by coincidence.

How weird shit happens every time you take drugs, for no reason at all.  The events synch with your new high energy mind, and external reality becomes more high energy in return.

For instance, one time my friends and I took some shrooms at my friends dorm, and then after we started tripping got in an elevator to go downstairs, and the elevator we got into was full of a bunch of guys and girls, and they were rapping and dancing in the elevator. They never explained themselves either cause they stayed on and went back up when we got off. It was crazy, we had no idea what was going on, and nothing like that has happened to me since in an elevator.

Not quite as poetic as some, but to me that's an example of synchronicity.

BTW, I guess I sort of see synchronicity, the law of attraction, and karma as all part of the same universal principle of how our minds interact with the external world.

Hey cool cats.

I think I've posted this maybe once or twice already but it is the best example of synchronicity that i can come up with and involves no human interaction, which is a bonus because me and people are like stainless steel origami, we dont fold??

anyways. check this, it really is phenomena at its best imo

I was walking out of my home town. I hadn't smoke weed for 2 weeks so my tolerance was way down. I dont think this would have happened had i not been so dam stoned.

I sat down at a lake a smoked two cones through a pipe straight green. I stood up and began to cross the bridge, I was listening to my ipod on shuffle when the song black swan came on by thom york. I was about mid way over when I looked up and a bloody black swan was directly above my head.

About two months later I was in a book store where i saw a book called black swan, I bought it, and it happens to be about unpredictable events that change and shape history. A good example of this is 9-11

Maybe the swan was aware that i had just been thinking of it's species because i was so blazed on bud and my consciousness was spread out like an invisible sphere around my head.

I also have a connection with the birds around my house where i live. And last summer it was completely uncanny how this particular bird would react to my thoughts, and always seemed to be within sight.

When I came home, there it would be looking at me singing a song, saying your early, you shouldn't be back yet.

One time when i was reciting some poetry id just written that was a bit emotional, it perched itself in a bush under the pergola and sung as if crying in pain.
When I went over to see if it was my birds singing this unfamiliar song, It looked at me through the bush as if to say, yeah, im feeling you bro.

If one of us was lucky enough to be born the same species im sure we'd be getting it on right now.
