Homecoming - Loph. fricii yellowing and shrivelling

I came home after 3 weeks of absence. Someone cared for my plants, but something must have gone wrong, because there are some problems, definitely. I am making separate posts to keep the subject lines and tags in order. I hope it is OK with the local policy.

This post is about a Lophophora fricii that was involved in some loph porn (dirty story here). Now it's looking in really bad shape.

It hasn't been watered for 3 weeks, but the other fricii (same source, identical conditions) is still doing fine. I just gave both some water. What's up?

The ill loph looks stable. The color became yellowish, but it seems less so than it was when I first posted pics. Here are the new pics, some of which taken together with its sexual partner for comparison. When I bought them (on the same day) and when I pollinated them, they were almost the same color.

The baby seems to be 100% back into shape. Less swollen than the healthy one, but definitely normal-looking. I wonder what happened with it!

The formerly ill loph is the shorter one with more sculpted ribs.

Have you checked the roots/base of the stem for rot? Keep the soil further down the base of the stem. I would get it out of the pot, out of the soil, and out of the sun whilst establishing what is going on.

I gave it a look, but when I took the baby out of the pot, I found the ground's still compact so I haven't tried to remove it (I bottom-watered the other day).

What can be seen of the roots is fine, though, and pleasantly hard/solid to the touch - unlike the button, which is a bit soft as can be expected.

I have to leave for 3-4 days now. I'm keeping the baby inside, away from light and out of its pot. Going from your suggestions, a little wait-and-see seems the best thing to do. When I get back I'll check again and maybe post some news.

Oh my!  That soil looks awfully moisture retentive.  I would probably rinse off all the dirt with water on a sunny day where the roots will have time to dry then repot with a soil that has much more drainage, withhold water for a couple weeks, and keep out of strong sun until it's a little cozier in its new mix.

To me it looks dehydrated and sunburnt.  It would make sense since they haven't been watered in 3 weeks.  It's also possible that you might have moved it outside without proper acclimation and then left on your trip, which would explain the discoloration (sunburn).

I wouldn't expect that to recover my friend.I had one do that from over watering one time,and it couldn't be saved:crazy:don't give up though,anythings possible:)

^^This is what I thought initially too, if it was rot it would of spread by now. I once bought a Copiapoa cinerea, put it out in the sun without hardening it and it looked similar to how this lophophora looks in the space of 3 hours.:sad:

No I haven't moved the baby. The other one (identical, identical history and placement) is thriving.

I think the soil was wet because I bottom-watered generously just a couple of days before. It doesn't seem too water-retentive. I bought 3 cacti (including the other lopho) that were potted like this and they are looking quite happy.

The ill loph is less shriveled now. It re-plumped quite a bit, but the color is still yellowish. At the moment, it's still indoors, far from the sun, in a temporary plastic cup exactly as last depicted. The roots are still hard and look healthy. I'll try to post more photos as the situation progresses.

Updated the original post with pics taken today. Playing the wait-and-see strategy... as you can see, the baby isn't re-potted yet, but I did move it back outside where it used to live (for the time being I'm providing some temporary extra shade).

What if I just repot it and keep it dry until spring breaks?

Updated the first post with new pics of the healed loph.

I really wonder what happened.

They don't look so alike now as they did before, so I found myself doubting they're the same species.  The dark pink flowers, however, were practically identical, so they were both identified as L. Fricii. Any second thoughts?
