need advice, computer techies only plz
    #13139490 -

I really want to get a solid state drive, but as comp nerds know, they're outrageously expensive. A 256GB SSD runs around $650.

I expect the price will drop in a few years, but if I wanted to get a 16GB SSD to run Windows 7 on as a primary and maybe keep one game on the primary(about 4gb), and all my other data on my secondary 7200RPM 1TB HDD, would it be worth it?

Current specs:
cpu: Intel i7 2.8ghz
ram: 16GB DDR3 @ 1333mhz
gpu: ATI HD5870
motherboard: Intel P55
psu: ANTEC 700 Earthwatts
case: ANTEC 1200

Worth it in what sense?
To satisfy your techlust?

As you say, they will get cheap soon, storage always does.

My computer is nowhere near as fast I want it to be, even with my fairly good specs so far. I suspect my HDD is bottlenecking my other hardware.

When do you think SSDs will be reasonably priced? Personally, it seems at least 2 years away. Right now, a terabyte SSD costs $3,500, compared to a $140 HDD of the same capacity, but on 7200RPM. I'm thinking if SSDs are 20x more expensive now, when will they only be 2x more expensive? Can't be any sooner than two years, more likely five.

700W PSU maybe not enough.

That can also slow down performance.

It's fine for the 1GB card I am currently running.

16GB SSD?!

From what I've seen the current minimum you can buy is 32GB, with 64 and 128 GB not too much more.

If you get one of those, you can store your OS, various programs and probably a number of games on it, and use your other HDD to store music, movies, etc.

Are you doing 3-D video editing? Or what?

Checkout www.newegg.com, you can buy virtually any capacity.

I think I'll get an 80GB SSD primary next year, thanks for the input toilet.

totally not worth it money wise.

if you're really aching for speed why don't you do like a 4 hard drive raid configuration or something.

I doubt your HD is choking your system. Seriously.

The man has a point.

4 HDD RAID 5 array would be pretty sweet, and probably about the same speed as an SSD, except you could have like 3TB instead of 64GB.

SSDs are sweet though - I would say minimum 32GB, and I would probably go with 64 myself, just so that I can store my most played games as well.  Win7 alone takes ~12GB.

I 100% guarantee the HDD is choking the system.

Add more RAM, and/or adjust your settings to use it better.

Seriously guys?  HDDs read/write speed on a good one is ~80MB/s.

On the average SSD, it's ~220MB/s.  That is a giant difference, and the difference in boot times alone show how big of a difference it makes.

That being said, you have more than enough RAM, that once you've loaded an application once it will basically be in RAM until you shut down (which I'm assuming isn't often), and RAM is WAY faster than SSD or HDD.

Dude he has SIXTEEN gigs of RAM.  That is a ludicrous amount, even by today's standards.

I use a 128 Corsair. Currently $300 on Newegg. It's fast and even with Windows 7, Office 2007 and a bunch 'o' software I've only used 70gig. I store my media on a SATA drive.

Do it. You won't be sorry.

Whatever drive you buy, see that it has TRIM. When I bought this drive it didn't have TRIM support but  I flashed it with a newer BIOS which does.

See if your mainboard supports SATA6. I'd get a SATA6 drive no matter what so if I had to upgrade my mainboard I'd be set already, but frankly... an SATA3 drive is still plenty fast. You'd most likely not notice the difference.

Just looked up your board. It's SATA3, so a SATA3 drive will work just fine.

Would you even notice a difference at all?  SATA 3.0GBit has a max of 3GBit/s, and even the fastest SSDs read at ~280MB/s, which translates to 2.24Gbit/s, so really I can't see there being any sort of a difference at all.
