Nitrogen

I've been using straight coir as my bulk sub, but I've been hearing that nitrogen might do my babies well and that adding spent coffee grinds would be beneficial to my cubies by adding nitrogen.  Will coffee grinds do me very much good?  Will they increase the contamination rate (we all know what a coffee filter looks like if you go a week without emptying & cleaning it)?  If it does do any good, is this because of the nitrogen?  If so, then wouldn't I simply be able to add something like ammonium nitrate to my coir?

If that worked, wouldn't we all do it?
I'm not going to get into why it doesn't work, the search engine can provide plenty of info.
Try it if you like, but don't get too worked up.

so myc can't break down ammonium nitrate?  Is it really the nitrogen in the coffee grounds that results in the benefits?  And what kind of benefits would one expect to see?

My personal opinion, coffee grounds are as much about texture as nitrogen.

hm.  I've been having such an easy time with straight coir, I don't really see much of a reason to go messing around with it - especially since it's so damn easy :smile:
