fishtank heater in vase?>
    #1298245 - 02/10/03 11:42 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

am i the only one that cant get this to work? I got 2 heaters yesterday from a pal that threw away his tank cause hes going off to college and was getting rid of shit. I got a 200w and a 50w. I was told that both worked fine. I went to walmart and bought a nice size vase. Tried with both at max temp (86 deg i believe) and nothing. I really couldnt tell that there was anyother heat commin out of this cause my gauges wouldnt pass 80. I wanted to get it at 85 which everyone says is where i want to be..

reason for me doing this was to help my inculated jars finnish colonizing. I am at about 75% in some jars ( just need the bottom of the jar to colonize) and some others are at about 50%. anyone use this vase thing successfully?

most have a small light showing if they are working. they have to be almost submerged in water to work. if they are sticking out the thermostat wont register the temp so they may be stuck on or off. try submerging them totally in ice cold water and plug them in.

if it was sticking out of the water it overheated and the air pressure went sky high and smashed the glass.
or it had a small leak, water got in, boiled like a pressure cooker and exploded.

and people say electric blankets are dangerous!

thats the thing i dont think mine was fully submerged.. for example it has a minimum water line on the heater and my vase wont even reach that part.. So i will try a taller vase and see..

How long did you wait?

We have to leave our terrarium closed for a long, long time.
I figure a minimum of waiting 4 hours.

I was pretty worried myself, until we left it alone overnight and it made it a nice solid 82 degrees in the terrarium.

make sure the vase is wide and much taller than the minimum line. water will evaporate quickly from a narrow jar and will fall below the line

i got a cheap 50watt heater. the kind you can not fully submerge. then a quart size mason jar and some silicon.

made a hole in the lid, put in the heater, then squirted a bunch of silicon around it to seal. works great.

80 is perfect.
