Amanita pantherina? And some huge Boletes

Habitat: Decidious wood, British Isles
Gills: White
Stem: White, thick, skirt on upper part of stem
Cap: Domed to flat, older specimens saucer sized and flat. White spots.

Were easily 100 of these in a relatively small patch of woodland. If they are Pantherinas has anybody eaten these? How do they compare to Amanita Muscaria? By the way I don't plan to eat them.





Also, a huge Bolete, ~foot wide. Yellow pores, next to 3 other smaller mushrooms (but still very large) of the same type.



Two younger Boletes, first one could be the same but the second one looks a different species. All growing in under Beech trees. What are these?

Nice pics!

Your ID on the Amanitas looks good to me.

The big bolete and the last one appear to be Boletus Edulis, the one with the reddish stem is likely a different species.

A. pantherina is considered poisonous in my book at least.  The colour of remnants on the cap looks like it but for just about everything else in that specimen I would have to guess Amanita rubescens, which is edible if well cooked and otherwise causes anaemia, and isn't pyschoactive.

I think SWFL is right about the first bolete also being B. edulis now that I see some white on the pores.  Good call.  And the second may be B. erythropus.

Don't take my word for it, let a TI say something.

Those are some darn nice looking amanitas.  I never realized the panther could look that cool.

Pantherina are said to have much higher levels of ibotenic acid and muscimol than the Muscaria  so I would imagine it would be quite an unpleasant experience to say the least.
nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, delirium and comatose state don't sound like much fun to me :evilpuke:

Here is one persons account of a trip on pantherina, I don't know if it is legit but it sounds too real to be made up. :whoa:

Yes I think they might be rubescens actually though a trusted ID would be nice.

So that stubby one still looks like Boletus erythropus. 

Leccinum scabrum seems right in the latest post.

I'm not sure at all about the last one but perhaps Cortinarius speciossimus.

Do you meen Muscarine? rather than mucimol.  Its my understanding that Ibotenic acid converts into mucimol after going through proper decarboxylation and that the majority of negative affects comes from the various amounts of muscarine in each individual mushroom. Mucimol is the chemical responsible for the deleriant affects and muscarine causes salivating sweats and nausea (some amanita muscarias have VERY LOW levels of muscarine and some are VERY HIGH. personaly i love to eat them but with caution, so far iv been lucky.

Anyway I don't think we're looking at an Amanita pantherina.  I would love someone to confirm or correct these IDs for OP and so I can see if I am getting good.  To recap:

A1. Amanita rubescens
A2. Boletus edulis
A3. Boletus erythropus
A4. Boletus edulis

B1. Boletus erythropus
B2. Leccinum scabrum
B3. Cortinarius speciossimus

Thanks. Here's a blurry photo of a more mature specimen of those small orange conifer forest mushrooms, all growing together. Have pores like boletes rather than gills like the Cortinarius speciossimus. Also some more in the background.

Right, sorry, thanks for those.  I suppose Suillus sp.  Looking for a Suillus luteus that had a stipe like that I got to here and Google says the caption reads "Kvevi hat", so maybe it's a Kvevi Hat (?!). :smile:

The Amanita is A. rubescens. 

The boletes are hard to ID without a macro shot of the stem and underside of the cap.

How were you able to rule out Pantherina? I couldn't find a defining characteristic to do so-

There are grooves on the ring and none on the cap margin, and the stem and the hole in the cap show ruby hues.
