If I were u and going to get a kit i'd look for one that uses grains and dung.
U can pretty much make ur own kit with

1 rye bag
1 spore syringe
1 bag of compost

and a small rubbermaid

And come out way better than 75 bucks
and prob yeild more and learn something at the same time.

Heres a link to compost
compost
Sporeworks.com has bags
and almost everyone has spores I prefer ralphster for spore but everyone has good 1's
Get ur rubbermaid at k_mart

That's the funniest site I have ever seen. Wow, anything to make money. I guess you can't knock the guy for trying to make a buck. I think I may be menstruating too and I'm a guy!

i'm talking about going to walmart and buying all the shit you need, not some ripoff kit that teaches you nothing about growing mushrooms.

Yeah I made a *huge* mistake when I bought my first kit. I got ripped off hard (worse than $75 hard.) Last time I trust my local headshop

heh, buying all the supplies yourself is fun, but it also has the possibility of going overboard....

lesse, for my setup, the following is probably a good breakdown of price:
(oh yea, everything is in canadian $)

1kg BRF - ~$5
5L vermiculite - ~$5
12 canning jars - ~$15
large rubbermade bin - ~$5
sheet of plexiglass - ~$20
roll of wire mesh - ~$15
hose - ~$10
epoxy - ~$5
ultrasonic humidifier - ~$50
digital lamp timer - ~$30
digital thermometer/hygrometer - ~$30
spore syringe - ~$30
misc. other things (like screws) and stuff for experiments that have failed - ~$40
--------------------------
grand total - ~$260

it all adds up quickly... of course, I decided that if I was going to do something, I might as well do it right, and in my mind, "right" means more complex and niftier. I have a bad habbit of buying too much stuff for these little hobbies of mine, but now I have a fairly automated setup to show for it all (which beats having to spray all the time).

Anyways, I'm sure that it's possible to get ahold of the bare minimum for growing at a way cheaper price (definately cheaper than a kit) from your local walmart, but in my opinion, it's just not near as much fun :]

here's what you need to grow, fruit, and dry ....

-case of half pint canning jars (grocery store)
-vermiculite (garden store)
-water
-brown rice flower (health food store)
-masking tape
-spore syringe (order from a vendor)
-lighter
-latex gloves (drug store)
-spore syringe
-large cooking pot (walmart)

-hydrogen peroxide (drug store)
-2 large rubbermade or sterilite containers (walmart)
-perlite (garden store)

-damp-rid (walmart)
-1/4 inch wire mesh (hardware store)

all of that shit will cost much less than buying a kit, and will be everything you need to build a reusable mushroom growing system.

i'd recommend using the PF tek. the materials i listed there were for the PF tek. for humidification, i'd recommend perlite, but there are other more expensive, complex, and less effective systems out there if you want to go that route. for a simple PF grow, perlite is best. read the FAQ and PF tek grow guide. for various reasons, i have grown using the PF tek many, many times, and if there is a part of the art of mushroom growing that i am a master of, it is the PF tek (i've got my own little variations and techniques that work very, very well). if you have any questions or need advise, PM me. my first grow was with the PF tek and i remember it, and the results of it, quite fondly. if i can help you experience the same, i'm glad to help.
