What I mean by paying the mortgage and not being able to pay it is the makeing homes affordable plan was the last hope for these people but as soon as they were collecting unemployment the plan was negated do to the fact that every three months they had to send paycheck stubs to the mortgage company.

The reason the lender wanted the pay stubs was to make sure you were not bringing in big bucks and acting like you were broke.Fair enough.

However the mortgage company stated that they would not accept unemployment compensation as income because it did not factor into their necessary income %factors in their pre prepared guidline.
So even though they could make the payment on unemployment the mort.co. said NO.
The reason I like to target this problem is because its part of more of the bullshit legislation proposed and not followed up on by the Obama administration.
Yes the lending was in fact a great deal for both sides.
A homeowner could take advantage of a great low interest rate and get a larger house for less money/month.
And the banks were able to lend more money.
Construction and economic growth were at an all time high.
Things were absolutely excellent till the job market
went in the toilet.

I hate to think that all the job and economical growth was hinged on low intrest rates.

No, that isn't why they wanted the pay stubs.  They wanted to make sure that the people would at some point ever be able to repay their loan.  You don't extend yet more credit to people who will never be able to pay.

That's right.  No sense throwing good money after bad.  And if they could make the payment, then why were they even in trouble?  Sorry, lack of arithmetical sense.

The adminstartion doesn't write legislation, that would be Dodd and Frank et al.

We got a chicken and egg thing going on.  The housing clusterfuck was a problem even before unemployment skyrocketed.

I agree that unions are a problem but they are a much greater problem in the public sector, and the way too high concentration of workers generally in the public sector, is a bigger problem than people's buying habits.

No, that isn't why they wanted the pay stubs.  They wanted to make sure that the people would at some point ever be able to repay their loan.  You don't extend yet more credit to people who will never be able to pay.

An article came out in today's news about a man who builds very small houses that cost less than $20,000.  At http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/home.html you can read about his company. 

Here is his introduction:  "My name is Jay Shafer and since 1997 I have been living in houses smaller than some people's closets. I call the first of my little hand built houses Tumbleweed. My decision to inhabit just 89 square feet arose from some concerns I had about the impact a larger house would have on the environment, and because I do not want to maintain a lot of unused or unusable space. My houses have met all of my domestic needs without demanding much in return. The simple, slower lifestyle my homes have afforded is a luxury for which I am continually grateful.


I believe that smaller houses and voluntary simplicity is the wave of the future.  I not going to say this is what people SHOULD DO, but I believe that either small houses, recycled houses, houses made of alternate materials and yurts are the way to go.  They are cheaper, better for the environment, easier to clean and much more affordable than conventional housing.

Twenty grand for 89 sq. ft. Seems like kind of a rip off. I can put up a yurt for a fraction of that, make it bigger, and use less resources I'll bet.

Hope he shits outside. And seriously, who's going to live in an 89 sq ft house?

I saw that.  The houses looked pretty cool.  Nothing interesting in terms of structure but from what I could tell of the appointments they were well made and it was certainly interesting how he crammed so much shit in a tiny space.  I don't know how they'd work for more than one person, though.  They seem like divorce factories.  And I doubt that the house that was featured was that cheap.  Too much serious custom carpentry.  But definitely very cool.

Natural convection of the earth.
a hollow buried tube and a fan at one end plus a simple solar panel will provide you with cooling for one small room.
The potential for solar heating cooling and general
storage of electricity is awesome.

89 square feet is the smallest house, they go up to about 850 sq. feet.  I just read about yurts in Mother Earth News and in Countryside magazines in this summer's issues.  They are really becoming popular.
