cardio is the only way, you need to lose as much adipose tissue as you can to get good muscle tone

How much cardio are we talkin here? I try to get in about 20min 3-4 days a week before lifting. It should be noted that I did just start doing this in the past week or 2. Before that it was just lifting.

if u want to get serious about ur muscle tone you should probably do 30 minutes to an hour of hard cardio daily like running or biking...

u have to push yourself too...it takes alot of work

cardio is ineffective. Too long too boring.

HIIT is where its at for muscle tone, and youll get alot of endurance as well

cardio is effective, and its only long and boring if you think it is

i did 30 minute sprinting intervals for a few months and got more toned than i ever had

Diet, diet, diet..

Exercise all you want but most of what your body looks like is determined by your diet and genetics.

That's never what anyone wants to hear because eating a bland boring diet isn't fun and working out generally is.

For nearly any fitness goal, diet is the first thing to look at when you aren't attaining what you are after.

i was into bruce lee when i was in high school, and from the looks of it, bruce lee never said anything about diet...think he said training is the most important thing

look at what michael phelps eats for breakfast...none of it really sounds healthy. it's all about training

Cardio and diet. Sounds like weight loss. Is that the key?

Can you elaborate on an ideal diet for gaining muscle tone?

Oh and I take protein after my workout and it helped a lot when I was small and wanted to bulk up, but now im sorta wondering if its doing more harm than good since im not necesarily trying to get bigger at this point just more toned.

Also, cardio isnt the most fun thing to do but you feel great afterwards when you're pouring sweat. Ill try to pick it up to 5 days a week 20-30min.

Thanks for the help.

lol bruce lee experimented with diet a lot. not to mention the attitude "if bruce lee didnt do it it must not matter" is retarded. Diet is much more important than training.

What you are calling "muscle tone" is really low bodyfat.  Everyone's muscles look more or less similar but the average person has a higher ratio of bodyfat to muscle mass so the striations and muscular definition can't be seen.

If you read up at all on bodybuilding you will find out quickly that the most important part of it is the diet.  Most bodybuilders leading up to the contest are running a high protein, low carb diet, and a calorie deficit.  They are in most cases losing muscle mass during this time, but a calorie deficit is the only way to lose a significant amount of bodyfat.

There's a lot more that goes into it and genetics play a huge role.  As ridiculous as the Bruce Lee comment was I'll still respond by saying he was always a naturally lean individual.  Ectomorphs have an advantage when it comes to being cut, and there are also studies showing that people who are already very lean lose more fat mass from cardio than those who are carrying a significant amount of fat.

Excess body fat in men decreases plasma fatty acid availability and oxidation during endurance exercise.

Abstract

The effect of relative body fat mass on exercise-induced stimulation of lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation was evaluated in 15 untrained men (5 lean, 5 overweight, and 5 obese with body mass indexes of 21 +/- 1, 27 +/- 1, and 34 +/- 1 kg/m2, respectively, and %body fat ranging from 12 to 32%). Palmitate and glycerol kinetics and substrate oxidation were assessed during 90 min of cycling at 50% peak aerobic capacity (VO2 peak) by use of stable isotope-labeled tracer infusion and indirect calorimetry. An inverse relationship was found between %body fat and exercise-induced increase in glycerol appearance rate relative to fat mass (r2 = 0.74; P < 0.01). The increase in total fatty acid uptake during exercise [(micromol/kg fat-free mass) x 90 min] was approximately 50% smaller in obese (181 +/- 70; P < 0.05) and approximately 35% smaller in overweight (230 +/- 71; P < 0.05) than in lean (354 +/- 34) men. The percentage of total fatty acid oxidation derived from systemic plasma fatty acids decreased with increasing body fat, from 49 +/- 3% in lean to 39 +/- 4% in obese men (P < 0.05); conversely, the percentage of nonsystemic fatty acids, presumably derived from intramuscular and possibly plasma triglycerides, increased with increasing body fat (P < 0.05). We conclude that the lipolytic response to exercise decreases with increasing adiposity. The blunted increase in lipolytic rate in overweight and obese men compared with lean men limits the availability of plasma fatty acids as a fuel during exercise. However, the rate of total fat oxidation was similar in all groups because of a compensatory increase in the oxidation of nonsystemic fatty acids.

As a general rule for diet, if you want to get more lean avoid sugars and especially later in the day.  Keep most of the carbs around your workout time, and do meats, eggs, and vegetables later in the day.

:congrats:

QFT. You couldn't be anymore right sir. Muscle "tone" is just low BF% and you don't have to do a single run to lose weight, its all about food. Although if you like to eat a lot, cardio is a great way to get a strong heart and to burn off a ton of extra calories.

When I cut I do a ketosis diet, it shreds fat off so fast its insane, but I don't like it because I have lower energy levels than if I was on my normal diet
