No.

that's up to you about the scales, but If I were you I would learn some chords first, so you can start playing songs. Scales get boring real fast if you are just learning the scales and not knowing how to utilize them. Learn scales after you have learned all of the chords. ultimate-guitar tab has a lot of lessons/tab

Try to find a good teacher if possible...

I'm self taught but I'm sure it was more difficult than it needed to be.

Though it does give me a fairly unique styling :smile2:

I'll tell you what has worked the best for myself and most people I know.

Learn how to read tabs (its quite easy and intuitive). Learn some of your favorite songs that sound simple and easy to play.  Start slow, classic rock songs are good for this sort of thing if you like that type of music.

From there, you can keep learning more and more complex tabs, but what I like to do is sit down and just improvise my own material.  I've been doing pretty much only this for over a year now and my playing has improved dramatically. It's your ability to make up cool shit that's gonna set you apart from other guitarists and impress people you're jamming with.  You'd be surprised how many guitarists can't make up awesome shit on the spot.

Also, learn the pentatonic scale for soloing and the major scale to give you a theoretical basis.  Learn how the major scale is made.  I'm not big on learning theory but over the years I've absorbed all the theory I need.  If you learn enough tabs you'll start to get the idea of how the guitar is organized theoretically, it's a very self explanatory instrument, kind of like piano in that sense.

Hopefully tabs will teach you all the basic skills like open chords, barre chords, playing licks, bending notes, etc.  The most important thing is to practice a bunch, at least 30 mins a day imo but preferably more.  You'll get good quick if you practice a lot every day.

Also, eventually you should graduate from tabs to learning songs by ear, that's when you can really start to get good.

basically all of the scales are the major scale. Pentatonic, dorian phrygian aeolean lydian mixolydian...they are all the major scale, just utilized differently.

Yeah, that's why the major scale the only one I memorized. But thinking in terms of the pentatonic scale is useful for shredding.

If there is one book I would recommend for any beginner and expert alike.. it's the Fretboard Logic series.
Solid as fuck, with in-depth lucid explanations as well as visual diagrams and logical ways of explaining the various patterns, scales, chord progressions, arpeggios etc. Will teach you all the basic as well as some advanced stuff, and it covers pretty much everything... best book I've seen so far for "understanding" the fretboard, especially if you are more of a visual learner.

Instructional videos are good. Youtube.com. There are billions of them.
And websites, a few good ones - http://www.guitar.com/ http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ ; http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ ; http://www.guitarlessons.com/
etc, etc etc.. there are billions of resources.

The best way to learn is to just practice, practice, practice.
Learn the basics first, and it's more important to learn PROPER TECHNIQUE first before speed.
Read, study, learn some tabs, learn chords, scales, arpeggios, etc,
play with other people, learn your favorite songs, write your own songs, practice, practice, practice.

I'm self taught, and although I had to work a bit harder and figure out a lot of things via trial and error and headache- I feel that overall it helped me develop my own unique playing style.

Guitar scales

This website has helped my greatly. What I would do is pick a specific key and learn all notes, play them up and down the fretboard memorizing both the positions and the names of each individual note within each key. It's boring and time consuming but eventually you'll know every note on the guitar fretboard by name, and you'll be able to identify what key signatures/scales that they fit in to. Essentially this is the way to master the fretboard...

Learning this way is also incredibly helpful if you want to learn more advanced music theory or begin composing your own music.

Edit- And also, since that post is only the half of it i'll offer some more advice.

I've been writing music since the day I got my guitar... obviously I had no fucking idea what I was doing at first but a few years later and i've written hundreds of riffs and parts... recorded a few albums... jammed with friends and that's what has kept me going. Have fun with it... that's the most important thing, and I strongly recommend you write your own music instead of reverting to covers all the time because it will make playing much more worthwhile.

learn to read tabs
learn all the major chords A-G
learn major scales

make your practicing time a schedule
I.E>spend an hour learning songs from tabs then a half hour for chords/scales

this is my best advice though
do not wait to learn scales! my skill improved 10 times in a month after learning them.  once you know scales your ear can start to distinguish spaces between notes in that scale

Huge oversimplification :crankey: Not that most people need to be bothered learning modes anyways.

called intervals, and yea, they help. For instance, did you know that any major chord consists of 1,3,5 of the major scale minor chord=1,b3,5. minor 7th? 1,b3,5,b7 you may not understand today, but soon
