Using the pentatonic scale
    #22251281 - 09/17/15 01:33 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I have the A Minor pentatonic down to the point where I can move freely around the neck without thinking of the "boxes" but when I'm playing around with it over a backing track it feels like I'm aimlessly plucking notes in the scale with no clear sense of what what's happening musically.  I know the root notes throughout the neck, but not any of the other notes, which probably is one thing that can help me sound better.

What tips do you all have for effectively using the pentatonic scale?

Learn the different positions of the scale if you don't already know them, also start playing it in different keys. Start relating the scale to chords as well, say your playing a minor pentatonic scale then you can also play an a minor chord to a c major chord and have an a minor pentatonic solo.

If you are limiting yourself to the minor pentatonic that's likely your issue. With most songs, it's about going in and out of the pentatonic and major/minor scales. 5 notes rarely does the trick for me, depending on the song of course. But yeah, post a record.

Learn all the shapes throughout the neck. Play them over and over and over. Learn various scale sequences. Improve melodies without a backing track. Improve melodies with a backing track. Play lead over songs and try to match the lead notes to vocals. All of this requires (usually) extending beyond the minor pentatonic scales.
