DNS Server

Techy types get in here! :smile:

My ISP's internet connection just went down, so I went on their forums section using my mobile and it said their DNS Servers were down and to use another DNS server instead. So here I am, using Google's public DNS server.

Any pros or cons about using another DNS server other than that of my ISP's?

Thanks.

Also, for the half an hour or so it was down, I felt weird lonely, which can't be a good thing!

I don't use googles DNS but I've heard really good things about it.

Seems like a cool idea, I mean free DNS is a pretty awesome deal.

Why do you think it's a good thing? (genuine question).

Why go with it over my ISPs DNS?

Well it's free so if you can hijack a connection you can get DNS service without using the providers DNS making it harder to tell if you're using their lines.

Plus google has the biggest server farm in the world and you should be able to access it no matter what.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping for some sort of magic wand to end all internet security issues but seems the pros are really in reliability and in some cases speed.

i use OpenDNS and im very happy with it.

that has some pretty good security features.

The one thing about google's dns servers is that there is a good chance that will give google info on every single web page you visit.

I dont really worry about my privacy that much but that still makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

There is no organization on Earth more interested in your security than your ISP.  I don't know about you, but I pay out the ASS for internet service and they know it.  They are going to BAT for you to protect your privacy way beyond some free service like OpenDNS.  Those babies would rat you out to save their cushy jobs any day.

me and a friend came up with an idea the other day.

cloud computing is the future. then heavily regulated utility computing where the government owns all the computers and ISPs and everything sucks.

then google is going to step out of the closet and be like "suprise guys, you can use "google internet" because we own a shit ton of dark fiber and have mobile isps"
