Calories in -> Calories out

You want to lose weight? Take in less calories you use.

Want to gain weight? Take in extra.

There ya go, there isn't anything else to talk about unless you have something more specific in mind.

He's talking about eating less calories (say 30% deficit) over a long period to live longer I think. The only proven way for mammals to live longer (other than healthy lifestyle) is to eat less.  Around 30% caloric restriction leads to around 30% longer lifespan.

This is only for rats and dogs though, for humans it has yet to be proved because of the logistics of studying someone's diet their whole life (especially if they're going to live longer).

Of course, one needs to make sure that they get adequate nutrients, and only be slightly calorie deficient not malnutritioned.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

I don't believe for a second that eating less makes you live longer though. You're far more prone to diseases and such when you are in a weak state of being, you need energy to thrive, hell you need 1800-1900 just for organs alone to function properly let alone walking around or running/etc.

Did you know that exercising dilates blood vessels 3x+ their normal size and it allows for much easier oxygen/blood flow, doing this means your heart pumps LESS beats than a person who doesn't exercise? This would mean theoretically your body organs have to work less to achieve even BETTER results than someone who doesn't.

And if you are exercising, you are eating. If you aren't eating right, it's all downhill.

I think its more important WHAT kind of foods you are eating more or less than how much.

Who REALLY knows though...? It is too hard to even study someone for 100+ years.

Modern fairy tale. You think ancient nomadic people (on their feet all day long traveling around, gathering food, and hunting an animal for days at a time) were consuming even close to 1000 calories from random fruits and greens they gathered? There are people to this day that eat 12 ounces of food a DAY and that's it. Many people that have lived to be over 100 years old credit a low calorie diet. The more food in you, the more waste in you. The more waste in you, the less efficient your body is at normal tasks (such a HEALING, fighting disease, exercising, etc).

I only eat a small salad, a couple of fruits, a handful of nuts, and a green smoothie every day and I bicycle 5+ miles whenever I have freetime. I wake up more refreshed and I can feel my body in balance.

I used to think I was too skinny... Would eat 2500+ calories a day while lifting weights and my metabolism would destroy it all. Switched to a raw food diet and I absolutely love the way I feel every day compared to how things used to be.

Food causes a lot of problems for people. It's essential to life, but not at the level of consumption that the economic powers that be have been leading everyone to think.

No I don't think you understand, I'm not a skinny little guy, I have a lot of muscle mass to maintain and the diet you just mentioned would make me into nothing. I take in 3500-5000 calories regularly and I'm extremely lean

Wastes? You act like your body doesn't get rid of waste on its own. A 3 day fast can get rid most of the waste as well which I will do randomly, there are many foods as well that helps your body detox, sweating is another way as well.

You will NOT exercise better by eating less...... you might be able to run farther if you are skinny because you will use less calories when you run/bike/whatever cardio but I'm a big dude, I bet you're really skinny, I need a ton of calories or I will constantly lose weight, which I don't want.

PS. Just because they didn't eat well doesn't mean they were healthy. Most humans didn't live past 40-50 just 100 years ago, you can thank modern medicine for making people live longer.

And what? You think eating less food will make you less prone to being sick? Nonsense. Your body thrives on energy, ALL functions of your body uses energy. You can call it a fairy tale but I call it real life.

Genes play far more of an important role to live long than the amount of food you eat.

No feifen, you just fail to understand metaboilism (I was taught this in University metabolism class).  This isn't about being lean or fat, just a matter of the basics of breaking down food for energy.

Energy in food is damaging to your body.  Ever burnt a sugar cube?  It has a lot of energy.  Your body needs to harness that energy, and in the process some of it cannot be contained properly and causes free radicals and damage to cells.  The more you eat, The more your body needs to break down energy and the more oxidation damage will occur.

This can be minimized by eating restricted calories but high nutrition foods.  You must realize, were not talking about starving yourself, but just eating lots of high nutrient low calorie foods.

I am not an adherent, but I do fast and overeat a bit sometimes which is kind of similar in effect.

Your body spends a lot of energy to process food also, and giving it a break from that allows a fasting metabolism to take over which has many positive benefits like increased insulin sensitivity, body composition, etc.

It is the fundamental paradox of eating.  You need to eat to survive, but it is still going to kill you in the end.

I am telling you there are lots of studies on the topic to show it works for smaller mammals and anecdotal evidence in people.

Also, the claim that modern medicine is the only reason people live longer now is preposterous.  The majority of the increase comes from proper hygiene, and good access to shelter, water and adequate food.

The medical system, through pharmaceutical deaths, malpractice, unnecessary surgery and more is around the third leading cause of mortality in the US according to some researchers.

well, a wise man gave me this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sattvic_diet

so it would be much wiser to eat much smaller amounts of food, spaced out across an entire day (we'll say 6-7 small meals,) am i correct? or does it depend..
