I know this is pedantic but it's a pet peeve of mine:

"Saṃsāra is the cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth  (i.e. reincarnation) within Hinduism, Buddhism, Bön, Jainism, Sikhism, Vaishnavism  and other Indian religions."

"Karma in Indian religions is the concept of "action" or "deed", understood as that which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect (i.e., the cycle called saṃsāra) originating in ancient India and treated in Hindu, Jain, Buddhist  and Sikh  philosophies."

[Quoting the relevant wikipedia articles]

Edit: my point being that the modern concept of karma doesn't inherently include samsara.

Karma is amazing. I definitely believe in it, and its changed my life around for the better. By believing in karma its made me a much more positive person, and a good person to everyone else.

The only thing you need to believe in, from a philosophical perspective, is that the universe is infinitely connected and that in the infinite chain of cause and effect, dying always causes birth in some fashion. The rest just follows logically.

When most people think of reincarnation they think of the ego incarnating, but the ego gets eradicated upon death.  So for the most part "you" still die, only the stream of your consciousness persists, but in the next life that person won't remember who you are so for all intents and purposes you're still dead as fuck.  I don't see it as wishful thinking at all, i know that's some peoples problem with the idea.

I think maybe our subconscious mind causes us to do things that we are not aware of that has a direct influence on what happens to us. Choices we make (conscious or not) eventually influence what happens to us immediately or in the future. This may be the mystical aspect that makes people think of things such as "karma." :justdontknow:

Sure I do, but I don't prescribe to some already created ideology. I'd rather just pave my own road than walk down the roads many others have walked.

But then again by doing that I probably am walking down a road already walked...:strokebeard:

Yeah, quite a few people go down their own roads and end up with a sort of karma concept.  Some people have gone wayyyy down their own road and learned how karma and reincarnation are just simple realities of nature.

edit: I haven't actually gone that far down the road.  I see karma in my everyday life but as for reincarnation its still hypothetical to me, although i pretty much accept it

How is reincarnation a simple reality of nature? In my perspective, there is nothing real about reincarnation.  It seems far to :nice and fluffy: of an ideal.  I like to believe that life starts at conception and ends at death and that is all there is to it. Any more is just wishful thinking IMO

Well, I don't know for sure.  Maybe your brain is quantum entangled with electrons all over the universe forming an "astral brain" that survives from life to life.  Or maybe the effect your brain has on spacetime creates a pattern that survives from life to life.  I dunno, something like that.  I do fully believe that our minds are capable of interacting with the exterior world on a profound level.

I would go so far as to say our minds completely make up our exterior world, but stuff like that can never be substantiated. I do believe that there is "information" or whatever you want to call it just out there in space and time ready to be picked up by whoever has the ability to do so.

Yeah exactly.  So what happens to the information of your ego after you die.  Maybe something logs your existence somehow and makes it possible to form into a new being after death.

I probably think about reincarnation mostly for fun honestly it puts such a satisfying filter on the world.

kind of.  i don't really think about it much now, but i believed in instant karma.  any punishment or reward in an action is completely tied to the action.

if thoughts existed before the big bang/reality then it is easier to comprehend.  but this cannot be proven

If thoughts existed before the big bang, that would mean that electrical energy and hence matter existed before the big bang, which would negate the big bang theory altogether... Or at least the part about nothing existing prior to the big bang, which I thought was a cornerstone of the theory.
