kali-yuga
    #12789721 -

many forms of yoga believe the earth perpetually goes through stages, much like the seasons, and that we are currently in the final stage kali-yuga, the dark age.

or, "the age of vice"

yogic philosophy theorizes that human morals degenerate during kali-yuga, that we become further removed from God and the times are troubles with war, strife, discord, tension.

i just recently learned about this term in a book i picked up on Tantra.  it seems to pretty accurately describe where we are right at the present moment.  the book explains why Tantra is THE Yoga practice for kali-yuga.

what do you guys think of this concept?

i think it accurately describes our current age for sure

in buddhism we're in the dharma ending age - where the teachings are slowly on the way out as people don't have the motivation and conditions to practice them to fruition - i also heard that buddhist tantra would spark like wildfire just as the dharma disappears

I was just passing through NYC, and through coincidence I stumbled across this radio station where this Indian astrologer was talking about the Kali-Yuga - "The Age of Iron" he called it. It definitely pinpoints our time. I see our disconnection with "God" as a dis-identification with our true selves - too much emphasis is put on the external and materialism.

On the bright side, this age is said to be coming to an end, aye? This correlates with the Mayan cycles of time and just about every other spiritual tradition which speaks of "end times." The next cycle is said to be much more harmonious and fun.

im not sure.  i need to do more reading and research.

there are some people who believe we haven't even entered into kali-yuga yet, that we're still in Dvapara Yuga.

from some of what i've read we are only a fraction of the way into a 432,000 year cycle

Some say this is the 5,000 year mark of the 432,000 years of kali yuga.

Some say kali yuga just ended.

Some say kali yuga ends this decade. (2012)

Some say it began when Krishna was killed.

I prefer to believe that we are just now entering kali yuga. We're at the heighth of our civilaztion(not technology). The predictions are that toward the end of kali yuga, plants will no longer bear seeds or fruit. Grasses will no longer produce grain. The only sources of food will be meat. Cannabalism will be a form of survival. People will eat their own young in order to survive. People will be so far removed from God that there will no longer be a point to continue the cycles of samskara. There will no longer be an opportunity for man to ascend and return to the Godhead. Nature will rid the earth of mankind and start over again as she has done countless times in the past. The time for liberation begins now.... Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.

Sounds like how no one can agree on when the age of Aquarius starts (started) either. I'll trust my intuition which tells me something big is off in the near horizon.

Is that like saying the stories behind Kali-Yuga have the power to scare someone into being a saint?

What I got from that quote is that only passion can help us break free from ego-attachments during these "end times".

I don't think much of the concept myself. It seems all ages have been like this and the big difference is there being more people with more leisure time in the modern age to get into trouble in. Human nature does not change imo.

luckily there is nothing like "human nature" ... what is a human? you think you are a static something? you're not. you've been a fucking fish one day.

also, what's up with indian tribes? were they similar to us in our cruel nature? or were they not human?

man, who knows... even on smaller scales we go through stages. our society goes from free-thinking to conservative thinking in a cycle of four generations. it's only reasonable to assume that there must be a phenomenon like this on a much larger scale.

yeah i've heard it described akin to REM/sleep cycles in the collective consciousness

what's interesting is that the same kind of cyclical pattern is described in buddhist cosmology - but there's differences. it's said that the human life expectancy will drop to 10 years at its lowest point (this probably is also lowered due to infant mortality etc) prior to the arrival of Maitreya.

What?

A human is a primate and primates have a primate nature. They act in ways that are common to their species and family and different in degree from other animals and insects and plants. Fish also have a nature.
