Amanita....?

I hope you guys don't mind me posting this.  No matter how sure I think I am, I always like to double check on these.  Thinking about frying it with some eggs or on a sandwich.



Habitat:
Next to a pine on pine litter with grass nearby

Gills:
White, gilled

Stem:
Bruising a little darker, concentric rings seem a little faded??

Cap:
Concave, not fully mature

Spore print color:
White

Bruising:
See stem

Other information:
Slight smell, a little pungent... hard to describe but I've smelled it on these guys before.

No, not amerimuscaria. Something in the A. gemmata group I think.

Hmm, interesting.  Thanks for the input.  Bright yellow-orange cap... doesn't A. Gemmata generally have a dull cap?... was a very hot day today and it was hit by sun... that could have had some effect on the color...?

Not looking to trip off this or anything.  Just curious.  Already feel bad for taking it.  Going to go find someplace to put it that might lead to future fruiting.  It just struck me that I saw red flags stuck in the ground in the area I picked which prob means the park sprayed something there. :mad2:

The large, sparse, pyramidal warts that aren't in concentric rings, the lack of concentric rings of tissue above the volva, and the way the partial veil is breaking all make me think it isn't A. muscaria. A. amerimuscaria usually, but not always has some orange in the cap.

It lacks concentric rings on the basal bulb, no it's not muscaria. It's an a-typical looking A. Frostiana

It prob isn't frostiana, but they do have warts. It doesn't sound like anything in my book

Feel bad for assuming it A. Amerimuscaria and for plucking it.  I had them in small amounts last year, and they taste great.

This was found in NE OH, btw.

Why? You likely didn't do any harm. Amanitas are good sporolators...if you want, go stick it back in the ground to release spores.

Me too. The base doesn't really match the gemmata group either. Can you get any more pics? Maybe HerbBaker has some ideas...

I did that, but a half hour away from its original site.  Unfortunately, it's been deteriorating there since last night so I don't think any more pics at this point would be enlightening.

I guess I'm somewhat of an idealist when it comes to that somewhat philosophical question of "harm."  I think if you move one single spore potential change, however small the chances, can occur.  Don't get me wrong, I do pick mushrooms for consumption and spore prints for new ID's.  Then again, on a biological reproductive level, I don't think "the mushroom" could be much "happier" having its spores transferred about 10 miles.

Anyway, I've PM'ed Alan to give this a look, but maybe I should PM Herb too...?  Thanks Bob :thumbup:
