The title says it; one of my buds told me that shame is just something that gets us to change.

My opinion is that this is spot on. However, sometimes its good to know the difference between shame that make sense and shame that is to demanding. Ie. If someone doesn't like you and they just met you, any feelings of shame will make you change. Still is it worth changing? Nop, because if you don't plan to be with them in the future it matters nothing to change for them so that they feel more comfortable and better overall with you.
