michigan morels season over!!
    #12692706 -

overall the season was great! at the boyne city fest many reported a bad year, i dissagree, it was cut short due to a dry spell but if you know where to look...

i sold out at the fest and wandered off onto boyne mountain, scaled that bad lad and found 6 pounds on the other side, some of witch were 1/2 pond blond monsters.

there is a controlled hunt they have every year at the fest, i decided to go on this year, it was 3 bus loads of pickers, they drop off at a random spot where everyone had 90 mins to pick, the winner got something?? i found 7 morels and almost had a heart attack trying to make it back in time. it was a blast and the bus ride was cool, i met several senior pickers that shared some info...

the season started early and ended early , my total hull was around 50lbs this year, i have almost perfected the drying and plasticizing morels for necklaces, they sold out at the art show, and am preparing more for next year.

enjoy the pics i will add more later...

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Not in michigan, but here in WA we are

I'm interested in your plasticizing morel technique, if you would be willing to share.

well the plasticizing tech is still in the works but here is what i have so far:

dry the mushroom fast with low heat and circulating air( try to keep mushroom's color)

after cracker dry, spray with a hard clear enamel, (polyurethane will eat the mushroom)  spray a very light coat and dry 100% spray second coat light, dry, spray third coat heavy and let dry slowly, after the 3 initial coats are applied and more coats will make the mushroom glassy(i didnt like glassy)
after the mushroom has ben sprayed and fully dried, i fill them with hot glue, filling the stem cavity at least, this make the mushroom hard and plasticized, drilling a hole 1/4 inch from tip for stringing on beads or plant it on some moss for a nick nack on a shelf,
the color keeps for many years, if done right. the mushrooms are durable enough to sit on but maybe not step on....

i will try this on random mushrooms over the summer. as for morels finding them with white stems is best, the darker stems look yucky.

Disregard the deer picture trigger posted in the original post - that one is from before I cropped and fixed the exposure.

Things I found while hunting morels:

These aren't really sheep, they're fancy morels:

Just a side note: my husband tricked me into eating a chunk of cooked morel...it was okay, but I still prefer to use them to flavor things. I am just not fond of the texture. I only say this because some of you were surprised when I mentioned I didn't like to eat morels in the last post trigger made about morel hunting.
