Coir and PH meter?

Here's a couple buys I was going to make yesterday I was unsure of.

Coco Soft on the left is 100% Coconut fur, but it is not compact as everybody talks about. The one of the right, Forrest bed, is compact material and the directions show to hydrate it, basically minus the heat, the same as the pasteurization methods on here. The catch is, it doesn't say what it's made of anywhere on the packaging. Just 100% organic.

Also, is this PH meter:


applicable in this hobby?

forget the ph meter, and you want the bricks of coir, i find them in three packs at petco in the reptile section.... they make a perfect amount of substrate to mix with verm and coffee (ph buffer) for one sterlite container size monotub

You want the forest bed coir.

Coir has a neutral pH...so no pH meter/kit is needed.If you plan on doing a casing with peat or any other acidic ingredient then you'll want a pH meter/kit and some natural form of pH up.

Actually, coir is fairly acidic, but it's OK.  Mushrooms prefer a lower than neutral pH.  As with nearly all bulk substrate materials, there's no need to adjust pH for mushroom growing, so I'd agree not to worry about a pH meter.

Just how acidic are we talking about though?

I personally never got around to using it in any of my soiless MJ grows (big fan of homemade organic soil!) so I would not know...but I cant imagine it having a pH any lower then 6.5 - 6.0

It varies.  I've seen it as low as pH 5.  However, mushroom mycelium thrives at that pH.

Thanks again RR...but wow as low as 5.0 pH  :wowz:

I've always read that coir has a pH around 6.0 to 6.7...good to know though,I guess it varies by manufacturer?

It's not manufactured.  It's a natural product and like anything else that's farmed, it is affected by climate, soil, etc.

Yeah you're right,bad use of wording.What I should have said was "So I guess it's all dependent on where the coir comes from".
