Quad core or Dual core?
    #12585331 -

I'm trying to find all the best parts that fits my lifestyle.

What's best? Dual or Quad and why?

a little info: I just plan on surfing the web and watching/downloading movies. I will also be doing some programming on it and some school work. Maybe a few games and maybe a little video editing, but that's not real important to me.:mushroom2:

Quad has 4 cores
Dual has 2 cores

4 cores > 2 cores

=> Quad core is better, if money isn't an issue of course

better is really subjective.

do you NEED 4 cores?

as i said in another post, i recently bought the Zotac MAG HD which has an Atom 330 (dual core). that is plenty for simple browsing or whatever. if youre not going crazy with the gaming it will be fine. video editing should be ok too.. it might take a little longer to encode the video but thats really not a big deal.. that machine was only $300.

if youre not going to be seriously gaming on it there is little need to spend any more than $500 TOPS on a new machine.

quad core obviously is faster than dual core, because they're 4 processing units instead of just 2.
if money isn't an issue and you need fast computing, then pick up a 4 core

If you were to look at a quad core CPU vs a dual core of the same price, you would find you get more cores, which are all at a slower speed than the cores in the dual core.

If you aren't using programs/games which have had the proper programming done to allow them to utilize all 4 cores, then there's simply not much point in getting 4 cores.

Obviously though, with resource hog programs and games, as time goes on more and more are being programmed to utilize 4 cores.

If you don't do things that are resource demanding, then there's not much point in getting a quad core. If you do, then it would be wise to get one.

so my understanding is that its like this:

a single core is like a sports car.

a dual core is like a wagaon.

and a quad core is like a truck.

if you want to get from point a to point b in the shortest amount of time, you'll want the sports car, but..

if your hauling a ton of bricks and want to get from point a to point b in the shortest amount of time, you'd want the truck.

and anything in between you'd want the wagon. is that pretty much spot on?

yeah but the bricks have to be specifically designed for trucks if you want to get any benefits.

invalid poll, where are the 6 core cpu's in this thread.  i7 extreme edition ftw.  don't forget about hyperthreading, it turns a quad into an 8 core cpu.

With his understanding about computers i highly doubt there is any way he can benefit from hyperthreading in any way. Besides, if hes considering a dual core, i really doubt he's got the extra $200 for an i7

Listen, cores times Ghz = speed in getting shit done.
There is really no downside in getting a quad core, im pretty sure ANy quad core can outperform a consumer based dual core product.

Get an AMD phenom II quad core (or an unlock-able 2 or 3 core and unlock it.) Best bet for the money is a Phenom II x4 with about 3.0 GHz.. I dont remember the exact model but i saw it on new egg for $120.

You will have absolutely no problem running anything on it until you get into professional or enthusiast software expectations.

If you have enough money, and want the most future proof/power deal get the i7, but you will pay at least double for the CPU and lots more for the MB (versus an AMD board.)

so what kind of motherboard do you recommend with the i7 or phenom?

THats a huge question to which you have provided no background on.

The answer to that q would be based on what you want the computer for. What do you plan on doing?

asus p6 series.  the latest one supports sata 6 and usb 3.  something to watch out for when buying an i7, there are 2 versions of it, u want the 1366 socket.

Thats a sweet deal. Looks like its all retail except the HDD, so you might need 1 extra sata cable.

You would need a video card and some dvd/blu-ray drives.

I would also add an SSD boot drive.

Hardly.  There are many cases where dual core is better than quad core, regardless of money.

At a given price point, dual core will run faster, core for core, than a quad core.  This means that if you are using single threaded applications, which most of us are, then a dual core will outperform a quad core.  However, if you are using highly threaded applications, such as a video encoder, then a quad core will outperform a dual core.  Most games are still single threaded, thus if your primary interest is games, or simple tasks such as surfing the web, then go with the dual core and put your money somewhere else.
