Core i7 920 Heatsink/Water cool
    #10484132 -

So Ive run into another problem. As of right now I feel like my HTPC will NEVER be build. IM SENDING ALL THE PARTS BACK!!!

but first.... more shroomerite help

So my "Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 120mm SSO CPU Cooler " is too tall by like an inch for my Moncaso 932 case. Unless I can mod the cooler I dont know what to do. I want to OC the CPU to around 3.5Ghz but with out a good cooler thats impossible. The stock Intel cooler is crap of course.

I was looking at some CPU water coolers but the 2 that would fit my purpose have bad reviews because of leakage. I certinally dont want that!. Along with leakage, bulky water coolers will no doubt not fit my case. I could  down grade to a socket 775 and send back all my parts and start from scratch, but I want to build this now! Its ending up costing me way more then expected to send back shit.

I looked at all the air coolers for the LGA1366 and they are all mostly over 130mm (max heatsink size for my case). It seems like any heatsink over 150mm is good for OCing. How the HELL would that Noctua fit a standard case? Its beyond me

I'm curious.

Why would you want to OC a HTPC?

From a case review.

Quote:
Due to the layout only drives which are shorter than 17 cm can be used. To test this compatibility a Pioneer 16x DVD drive is used, which is just under 17cm long.

Nice looking case by the way.

yes I just read that on the site. I want and need a bluray drive. Its a HTPC for christ sake. It seems that only Lite-On is the only make of a 170mm BD optical drive. Both are shit.

> Why would you want to OC a HTPC?

It can be done.  Two reasons for me; I wanted a computer that was quiet, with a small footprint, yet fast.  Plus it is a major challenge that is very difficult.  I ended up making an almost complete 3D mockup of the system (out of cardboard) before I purchased any parts.  In doing so, I discovered that the cpu cooler I had selected would cover part of the memory, making some of the memory slots useless and a few other clearance issues.  It took several revisions and a few compromises before I found components that would all fit.

I understand it can be done.

I guess where my curiosity is directed is that by it's definition a HTPC is dedicated to Home Theater, and that most HT needs are not extraordinarily resource intensive other than perhaps the video card. Even that isn't greatly resource intensive. My HTPC uses this mainboard with HDMI video on board and has no problem with video playback.

In the OP's case he is using an enclosure with semi-limited airflow and deliberately adding more heat by overclocking.

So my question remains...... why?

If it's just "because it can be done" I'd suggest it may be that he's making life harder for himself than need be. He, by his choice of mainboard shows that he already has a fast processor. What, besides more heat, is to be gained?

I guess that makes sence. I just wanted a CPU that was over 2.xx Ghz. I do plan on playing some games however. But I suppose this isnt a gaming rig. So you think I should just leave it? The Mobo I got comes with an overclocking program built into the BIOS which is 1 of many reasons why I chose it. I would like to at least bump it up a little.

Im just dissapointed because I want what I want.

That by itself is a completely valid reason.

However since you asked.... if it were me I'd try it without overclocking first. Play your games, see what happens. Add a program that will monitor your system temperatures. Run it for a bit to see what your baseline temperatures are.

If your happy with the performance, leave everything alone. After all, a cool CPU is a happy CPU.

If not, then play with your overclocking in the bios, keeping an eye on the temps as you go while making gradual changes.

My mainboard is very overclocking friendly but it runs so well as is (using an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad Core)  that the only setting I manually changed was to get the ram to run as 1066. It defaulted a bit slower for some reason but there was a noticeable difference when I dialed in in to the manufacturers specified timing.

I have to send back my Blu Ray burner because the Moncaso case only allows for a 170mm long drive. Lite-On is the only maker of 170mm BD drives :frown:
