a contamination might smell, but it should be hardly noticable, and you would have to be very close to the jars, why? do you have to hide, I do and I have had no problems so far

I'm growing my first batch and have growth in all jars w/ no contams (knock on wood)and I have not noticed any smell from them at all. I just keep them in my dresser for incubation trying to maintain a 75-85 degree temp through out the house.

You're heating the whole house just to incubate your jars? That's probably more expensive than its worth. There are plenty of cheaper ways to do it. Heat pad, aquarium heater, or just a light bulb.
