I love all of you, but learn to use your camera's macro with the flash off.
    #12547409 -

In the hobb(y/ies) that brought us all here, it's extremely important to understand the macro setting on your camera. And don't worry I'm just like you; in that while your fancy little Kodak isn't A Nikon SDLR, I assure you, this is not that hard. Couple other things:

-If you're in macro mode, or without the flash, you need an extremely steady hand. I try to rest my hand/arm/camera on something.

-Some of the AF (auto focus) features on these new cameras suck assholes. Don't be afraid to snap a bunch and reposition yourself a little different distance away from what you are photographing.

-Never hold what you are trying to photograph.

-Maybe some of you are taking pictures with a phone, but even at that, cameras these days are running 2MP cameras. Follow what you can of this and your pictures will be fine. Or maybe it's time to invest in a little camera.

-Learn to resize your photos in PAINT. It's simple. Open the picture in MSPaint. Make sure the canvas fits to the picture so there in no blank, white canvas available. Go to Image > Stretch and Skew, and reduce the size, equally, horizontally and vertically.

I see a lot of good photos here, but a lot of bad ones. And when you're asking for an idea, or have a question about something, it really sucks.

My camera is a prehistoric bird who slams his beak against a stone tablet in order to produce an image.
It's a very hostile and depressed bird and I am worried about approaching it with this message.
Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

flashes don't mean a damn thing.  Flash used properly is win.

That's off camera strobe lighting, brotha. Turn your point and shoot flash -off-. A good one can only illuminate up to 12 feet. They have a terrible color temperature too. Decent strobes are in the sunlight temperature range, no telling on the point and shoots. And when you get up close they will just totally destroy your depth and give a nice, bland washed out look.

And as somebody who owns a Nikon dSLR, I can tell you the camera means almost nothing. It never has. Every point and shoot that isn't $80 (and probably those too) will let you manually expose so you can get a fast enough shutter speed so there won't be blur. Apertures are a totally different beast with sensors so small and the rear element of the lens being so close to said sensor. You don't need to worry about a razor sharp depth of field. The easiest thing to do is to just turn on your grow light, but another 6500K light next to it (a lamp maybe) and snap away. Two bulbs on your subject less than 4 feet away is more than adequate light.

Also, if the photo isn't focusing, STEP BACK. This isn't quite macro photography. Just photography that requires detail. You're better off turning on macro mood, stepping back a foot and zooming in to compensate.

That is true only at low light levels, and only when you are not using the flash.  It is difficult to use the flash in macro mode, but it can be done.  Usually by putting something over the flash to diffuse the light.

Camera phones are not acceptable under any circumstances.

The gimp is much better than paint.  Its free and does everything photoshop does.  It works on Linux, Windows, and OSX.

 GIMP

It doesn't do everything Photoshop does. In fact, I'd say this is the one instance that you're better off not getting the free alternative. Unless you're a pirate

The algorithms for curves are junk. The filters are dated. The tools aren't even half as intuitive and most of the time I can finish my work three times faster in Photoshop. It's professional software for a reason.

I've supported myself off my photography for almost 5 years now. I've used Photoshop all 5 of those years and the last 2 I've been also using GIMP on my Linux machine. I recently broke the harddrive that had Photoshop/Windows on it so I've been down to -just- GIMP. I would never tone a photo I cared about on it. If your goal is to just make the photos look decent enough for online usage, may as well just learn how to take decent photos. MSPaint is way easier for resizing than GIMP too. The crop tool is super tedious.

Just my 2 cents. It all comes down to what gets you the picture you want in the way you want. I'm just happy people are taking photos
