Craters/Asteroids
    #12519844 -

I was watching a program on the discovery channel about near earth objects and they talk about craters formed from impacts. They say how this one asteroid that made a certain crater they're showing would have gone into the earth about it's own diameter. So why can't they just dig down and find the asteroid if it's still so fresh the top hasn't eroded yet?
Wtf happens to large asteroids that have left good marks on the earth? Do they erode away before the rock around them? I don't see how that could happen.

I'm fairly certain that they're destroyed in the collision, and their debris are scattered around the impact site.

Yup, finally found the page with the right information. Had to go through lots of doomsday pages before i figured out what to type.

That sucks they explode, it would be sweet to excavate a gigantic asteroid.

It depends on the asteroid but most are not dense enough to hold shape and they will disintegrate on impact

I think some of them explode before impact, which steal leaves a big ass crater.

Really?

These fucking monster are destroyed on impact and mostly end up in the atmosphere.

Think of a nuclear bomb.  It's like asking why isn't the bomb still there?

Well a nuclear bomb is a relatively small amount of material where-as meteors can be 20km wide solid hunks of rock. So you could see my initial reasoning.

Not really.  The amount of energy and friction that comes from large asteroids is instantly pulverized when it hits the surface.  That's if it doesn't already blow up in the air.
