$30 400 watt mh fixtures

are these suitable for growing plants? they sound like the right kind..
no pics of the bulb either, so i couldn't really tell if these are as good as the other mh lights.
some guy has 60 of them for $30 a piece or 25 for all

I looked at it, and there really isn't much at all in the description...... I would ask the dude selling them if I were you, they look like the lights that are used really high up in the ceiling in warehouse-type dept stores and whatnot...

metal halides are obsolete.

T5's and HPS are standard now.

this can be hps if you get the hps conversion bulb....

These would work fine, but you would need to wire your own power cable (fairly easy). The reflector looks very large, so shipping would be expensive if you couldn't pick it up. If you don't use the reflector, you may need to purchase a socket (mogul or medium, depending on your bulb) which would also need to be wired (again, fairly easy). Besides that, the ballast would be suitable. Some of these magnetic ballasts, especially ones meant for street lights, may hum or buzz.

Eh.... No.... MH is still perfectly good for veg... The blue spectrum that MH gives is more promotive of closer node growth, creating more bushy, stout plants... HPS is the red spectrum which causes stretching, which is good in budding, not not necessarily in veg, especially with sativas...

mh lights would be my choice for vegging. from what i've seen t5s will leave you with slow growing plants. healthy happy but slow growing plants.

I actually have a light like the one linked except I bet my reflector's even larger than that!  I would advise against getting one though.  Because they're top-ballasted they are extremely heavy and mine I have trouble fitting through most normal doorways.  Also if you're growing plants with it, between the ballast and reflector there's a good 2-3 feet of wasted vertical grow space.  I got mine from the local school district (used gym light) for $20 and wired my own cable to it and have used it to veg before.
