Grow light question
    #4212575 - 05/24/05 01:16 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I am about to invest in a 400W grow light. However, I want to be able to use both HPS and MH in one system, and I think that I have found the light that I want to purchase. But I have a question, is having a switchable ballast better than using a conversion bulb? The system I want will take both an HPS and MH bulb, however the MH is a conversion bulb. By the way, the HPS bulb that comes with this particlular system puts of 53,000 lumens and MH conversion bulb puts out 38,000. Here is a link to the light I might buy. Any tips would be appreciated!

I have a 400 watt MH & HPS that also has a switch so that you can use both bulbs. I use the MH for veg and the HPS for Flowering my orchids. It works really great, there should not be a huge difference between the conversion bulb and an actual MH bulb. I mean as long as it puts out 400 watts of light you should go with the cheapest one. My MH conversion bulb does great and I see no difference in rate of growth from using it compared to my old regular non-switchable, non-conversion bulb MH system.

Yea, makes sense, I just wondered if there would be any difference as far as lumens output when using a conversion MH bulb in an HPS system rather than having a system with a switchable ballast and using a regular MH bulb. And by the way...does that system I linked look like its worth the price?

i wouldn't buy something like that because you have no idea of the quality since it's some no name shit from ebay and the price isn't that great. i would just get a 400w system online or locally and burn mh bulbs in a hps ballast. it'll burn the bulbs brighter and reduce life expectancy of the mh bulbs but not really that significantly. there's not a big point in spending a lot trying to get mh's if the plant you're growing only vegs' for a couple weeks imo. :stoned:

Well, in my experience those no-name budget lights on ebay are great. Sure it is just a bent piece of metal for the reflector, but it works. And some hyrdofarm that does that same thing would probably cost $250 at least. And the ballast has a two year warranty which is nice. I really like the idea of using both MH and HPS during the growth process, but it really would save me a lot of money to just simply get an HPS. Any other opinions on this setup?

Hey man, I REALLY think that I will just build a light. I have always wondered about it, but never really looked into it. I didn't realize that you could build a decent grow light that inexpensively. I am an overgrow member and will start my research now!

i actually just built a 400w ballast and after i bought a hortilux it was like $115usd. when i was in the hydroshop for stuff i asked how much their 400w ballast w/ mogul socket and hortilux was it was $140cnd which was actually cheaper then building it. it was pnw hydroponics, they have a site www.pacific-hydro.com but no online catalog and might be expensive to ship to the states but i'm sure there's a ton of other places you can get them that price. i didn't mean get a name brand expensive as shit one, just that you can get them done just as cheap and be sure it's done right. i don't know electricity and wiring that well, i'm not an idiot either though, it just makes me nervous in case of a fire more so that it breaking. same thing with ebay, i don't trust electronic stuff from there, especially when it has the potential to burn a house down easy.

If you wire one yourself be super careful. If you wire it wrong you either burn down your house or kill yourself.

perhaps it is better to just buy one.

Note everyone says to just get a HPS light and use a MH conversion bulb... the price is less that that of two systems or switchable and finally the mh to HPS conversion bulb is more expensive.

But actually, you might as well just buy a hps and mh light. Mixing the lights is better anyway+you can use hit the plants better with two lights than one.

ie
this is a 600w hps for example
------
----------
-------------
----------------

or
a 400w hps and 400w mh

----- -----
------ --------
-------- -----------
--------- --------------

I know that is not perfect but you get the idea. For the same amount of money as a higher wattage single light or for the switchable ballast you could just run two lights.

I hear people just use hps most the time anyway since the veg stage is so small. You could just use fluro lights instead for the mh. At least if we are talking about growing those herbs that everyone likes.
