Laughing Gyms in Melbourne - id and ARE THEY ACTIVE?
    #12424858 -

Hi guys, these are definitely gyms, but I'm trying to convince my friends they'd be ok to eat, so a conformation would aid in this regard!  Found on a rotting pine stump. Will spore print tonight, but clearly scaly surface, annulus, growing in clump. Gymnopilus luteofolius?

And for the real question - has anyone here in Australia (specifically Vic) eaten these and can confirm inactive or active. I've had a search around, and I've seen lots of conjecture. Lots of books say no, but many people say yes. So tell us your story and how they were prepared!

This happened with the Wereroa novazelandie, where they were magic but no one posted about it. I want to clear the confusion.

Many thanks, it's been a while since I posted here. :crazy2:

They are very similar to some Gyms I found last week.
I made a tea out of some and it was a waste of time.
From what I can gather you have to eat a shitload of them to get off and they taste like crap so that's why I made a tea.
But wait for a respected ID before you take the plunge

I have only heard that there aren't any active in Australia. Not sure how true it is, but with the amount of psilocybe subaureginosa around Melbourne, why bother wasting your time for gyms?

There are already subs out there now, ya might as well try and find them! You'll have a 10 times better trip with them anyway

OP, they aren't going to kill you, so why not try them out for yourself? For science?

They are Gymnopilus junonius. 100% not active.

And how do you know this, other than Alan Rockefeller (who lives on the other side of the world) told you so?

The effects: totally mouth numbing.

Wiscokid mentioned once, a good indicator for activity in Gyms is to look for bruising on aborted pins. He's got a pic somewhere that shows it.

so anyone find out if AUS/NZ gyms are active?

I saw some smaller ones and even they didnt blue/green, so what ya reckon?

you reckon theres any other way to test out psilocybin?

Yea unless you don't find any green bruising I wouldn't bother eating those bitter things.

In paul stamets 'psilocybin mushrooms of the world' book he says that this species varies in activity depending on where you live in the world... it varies from place to place. Does not mention Australia/NZ though. It also says that some guy ate a tuft of G. Junonius and suffered from priapism for 3 days.... ouch! And it say that the extremely bitter taste makes it hard to consume.

Nice i love the gym posts!!! Gets me pumped for mine - but like clockwork im waiting till end of june-4th of july - perfect timing:biggrin:

OP - those look like a gym of some sort for sure:thumbup:
What tho is a goooooood question:wink:
There is not much mycology actually done on gymnopolis thus far and most mycologists don't wanna possitively id one cause the literature around is all outta date - and i think most agree its not that potent and has LOTS of variation - so most stray away - - -- i will donate all the prints ( maybe specimens _) to pro mycologists for study - i have 3 kinds readily found here - all are active to some sort - here is a pic of my BLG spot - with bruising aborted pins

These BLG's are indeed active - but significantly weaker than even the Gymnopolis Luteus i find that look like this
and the first cluster of active g.luteus i ever found!!!
Gyms will kinda show their potency - if they don't bruise much they are mostlikely weak to non-active
BUT _ NOTICE _ all ive found here in WI bruise blue and are indeed active!!
Here is one more pic i have of a 3rd looking type i find -
These here have a look different than all my other spots - yet are still bruisng blue/green - but notice the scaly caps and lighter overall color - not the bright bright yellow of the luteus im familiar with

OP- you got a really cool find - sorry to hijack the thread- i like posting up bout the gyms - they find me everywhere:laugh: I almost see some light green/blue on the pinns in the cluster edge?? - if not- they may be VERY VERY weak n not worth it - - - you guys got tons of other great finds out there so still b nice the the gyms n try n spread em around!! - keep your eye out for bruising  and pick personal use ones when really immature - b4 the veils break - and if you use15dry gr or good pretty pins- you'll be laughing your ass off guaranteed:thumbup:

Great post Wiscokid, your enthusiasm for this genus is obvious and not uncommon for those who have gotten into gyms.
As is obvious from your post, even at the cost of consuming more biomass the gym experience is well worth it.

G.junonius is believed to be inactive in AUS/NZ and there is yet to be a positive bioassay for this particular species from these counties.
Without evidence of bluing I'd probably give this particular species a miss.

I would say Gyms are my favorite mushroom. There are some in my sig that I found recently, didn't want to disturb them by eating them so I let 'em be.
