I bought a toshiba and it was a defective model and tried to return it and they admitted it was defective Needless to say I was stuck with an $800 piece of shit I was tricked into buying and they stop producing them and sold what was left to unsuspecting people and refused a refund after 14 days since it was discontinued. Toshiba can officially lick my nutsack sevenfold.

Best part is they did return the first one for the same model as you can't get a refund just exchange for the same defective model. So when I called back after 15 days they said yeah those are all defective and they all do that. That's why we stopped making said model, how ever we are still selling what's left in inventory Pretty much laughed in my face at one point.

I'm curious about this if anyone can shed some light on it. I understand the concept of multiple cores and how they work, but I'm curious why clock speed hasn't gone up much. Before dual-cores there was a lot of 3+ ghz processors. Now even as quad-cores become more common I'd expect clock speed to go up, but that's not really the case.

Before when all chips had more similar architecture then the clock speed was a reasonable measure of performance.  Now architectures are more varying and so the clock speed alone doesnt tell you much.

An analogy, if you have a simple one speed car then RPM is proportional to speed.  The more RPMs the more speed you have.  But if you get a transmission in there then RPM is no longer proportional to speed.  Furthermore, you start building cars with different types of engines and then RPM correlates with speed even less.

For chips the clock speed is the frequency that the voltage goes up and down at.  But different chips can use this in different ways.  A new chip may be able to perform more instructions off of the same clock speed than an older chip.  This is because the engineers have designed it better and more efficient.  So chip A may have a lower clock speed than chip B, but still perform more instructions per second than it.  Furthermore, different chips may be optimized for different types of algorithms.  So chip A may only perform more instructions when doing certain tasks.


I really dont know much about it beyond that overview.  (so no follow up questions )  Maybe somebody versed in computer science can shed some more light.

In the end what you are about is real performance, not some number the manufacturer plasters on the box.  Check out Tom's Hardware for real comparisons and useful info on what chip does better or worse.
