adenium obesum- the desert rose.
    #12372736 -

i got these at myt local ghetto fela market. and really ghetto cause evry other little girl had a baby in there hand or stroller.

any ways, i want to grow this plant again because i planted the last one i had in the ground and when it froze here it died.

any tips from any bod y that has grown them?

2 for $5. can't go wrong with those prices.

2 for $5 is definitely a good price.

I had one last year but gave it to my roommate as a parting present.

I really have been itching to start some from seed or get a few more recently.

There are SO MANY neat varieties.

I'll have to make that a priority in my next order.

Only things I've found is that they like full sun, lots of rootspace, and do well in high humidity.

high humidity? well maybe not in south texas but i will try and give it the best home.

i hear its easily propagated through cuttings/ how true is that?

You'll lose the caudex that way... and be carefull and put it gradually to full sun if it's not used to... the leaves are prone to burn if not !

It's in the same family (Apocynaceae) as Plumeria/Frangipani.. and those look similar and are easily rooted from cutting. I wouldn't be surprised if cuttings root easily.

Plumeria :drooling:

I thought about getting some at the plant show yesterday.

The only plant that was on my list that I didn't find was Brugmansia sanguinea

They are one of the easiest plants to root! I think they are almost exclusively grown from cutting. Extremely common down here. I have a nice tree, about 5 feet high with the white flowers with yellow centers. There was one outside my window at my old house too, when I was a little kid, I remember the sweet smell hanging in the air.. Nowadays I pick up the fallen flowers and keep them in my car, sometimes tucked in the A/C vents.
:homerdrool:

I've been seeing many of the pink-flowered variety in my area too. I'm going to make a point to ask someone for a cutting when I remember. People probably prune the larger ones all the time and throw out the potential new trees!

Every winter though, it loses all its leaves (way before its cold enough for frost) and looks pretty strange.. it reminds me of a succulent or something when it doesn't have leaves. A couple weeks ago new leaves appeared and now new buds which should be opening fairly soon, I'll take pics!

i took out my last one because it had no leqaves. i thought it was dead and ran over it with the lawn mower. i should have known better as it was still green in the center.

awww nuts. Sorry to hear that! They may well be popular in texas too, and probably grow pretty quick (not sure), so just keep your eyes peeled for a neighbor or someone to ask :goodluck:

ohhhhhh dude, I've been talking about the Plumeria this whole time after Dan posted the google pictures link. Different genus! But yeah, it's possible desert rose does the same thing with their leaves.
