Are you saying that it would be better for felons to be employed over non felons?

It is neither necessarily better or worse.

You should elaborate, what exactly was your felony.(i know it was resisting arrest but what happened)

No, I am simply saying that there should be programs to make felons more attractive candidates for employment and the state should facilitate the employment of felons in order to give them a stable source of cash and dissuade them from turning to mugging, robbing, dealing, extorting, etc.

I think a more strict penalty for repeat offenders would be a better incentive for felons to stay out of trouble.  I refuse to agree with the idea that felons should be favored over law abiding citizens with respect to employment eligibility, or be given some sort of advantage.  It makes no sense at all that there should be any sort of "program," and I'm going to assume you mean a government subsidized program - this is an entirely different can of worms I don't want to open in this forum.

All that being said, I support reducing the severity of charges against nonviolent offenders.. especially minor drug related offenses and the like.

Being a felon does not make you disabled, it just makes you an unappealing candidate for employment considering so many other people who aren't felons are also needing jobs right now.

I wonder what a bunch of jobless felons are going to have to do for money...:uptosomething:

thats usually why they go back to the big house.

Which just shows that they become more of a danger to society if job-seeking is made more difficult for them.

Also, people with jobs are going to have to foot the bill for their interrment.

I agree--their opportunity to secure employment should be equal to a non-felon's opportunity to do the same.

So are you saying that if someone commits and is convicted of a felony, that they should have the same rights as someone who has obeyed the law, and be given the same opportunities?

Everyone makes mistakes. People should be judged or limited employment based on the type of felony.
Not just some blanket generalization. Oh you are a felon. Because as we know some felonies are complete bullshit.
Resisting arrest felony != Child molestation felony
Possession of a controlled substance felony != murder/rape felony

As with almost anything else, the context is key.

Everyone makes mistakes but not everyone commits felonies.  Let's not be irrational here.

Re: I guess being a felon makes me Disabled? [Re: idiotek]

Normal people commit felonies all the time, they just don't always get caught.
According to the law, possessing certain sacred psychoactive plants is a felony.
Do you consider that a crime? The law does.
Why I said they should be judged based on the type. Not all felonies are created equal.
Someone convicted of a non-violent, victimless felony should not be held to the same standard as someone convicted of say, 1st degree murder.

I already covered that.  I agree with you about your point that some felonies are undeserving of their connotation.  My point was that the notion of giving advantages to felons over people who have clean records in seeking jobs is completely illogical, especially based on the idea that it would curb the chances of repeat offenses.

Re: I guess being a felon makes me Disabled? [Re: idiotek]

Ah well I should have read the whole thread. I agree then, I don't think felons should have any advantages to people with clean records.
But as it is currently set up... felons have an extreme disadvantage to getting a job compared to people with clean records, regardless of the type or context of the felony.
This is a double edged sword. Being a felon you are automatically at a severe disadvantage in the job market for life, everyone has to make a living. So you can't get a job to support yourself, what do people usually turn to? Well if they are ambitious and motivated they might start their own business and become their own boss. Or maybe they'll just commit more felonies.
A program to help felons reintegrate themselves into society would not necessarily be a bad thing.
Nor would it give them any sort of advantage over others with a clean record..

A lot of those issues could be amended by allowing certain nonviolent felony offenses to be expunged from one's record after a period of time, or perhaps after all fees are paid and time is served.  It might also help if employers were more willing to talk to people about their felonies and get some background on them.

It's a really hard issue to pin down with any sort of all encompassing solution, but I think we're on the same page about it.

Re: I guess being a felon makes me Disabled? [Re: idiotek]
    #12312259 -

Yeah that would make sense. People shouldn't be branded for life for certain nonviolent offenses.
Furthermore, some nonviolent offenses, shouldn't be an offense or criminal issue in the first place, but that's a different thread.
I think in OPs case, some stupid coffee shop that isn't going to background check, it's probably just best to lie. Honesty is usually the best policy, but not always.

There should be "back to work" schemes for people who've run foul of the law to get them slowly integrated back into society.

Maybe like a halfway point between being unemployed and actually working.

Starting with something simple, nothing to aggrevate stress levels(esp. in violent individuals).

The type of job suited to you could be assessed and issued to genuinely interested individuals.
