High Electricity Bill
    #12197565 -

My bill for my one bedroom apartment was running around $40 a month in the summer.  I have no airconditioning, no dishwasher, but I was taking 15-20 minute showers daily in summer.  I use the electric stovetop every morning to cook an egg.  I also use the toaster everyday but I unplug it when not in use.  I use the electric oven regularly.  Im good at keeping things unplugged.

When winter came and I began to use my electric heater to warm my 550 sq ft apartment, my bill went up to $90.  Im unemployed, so I'm home a lot.  I turn the heat off if I'm going to be gone for a long time.

About a month ago, something broke on my water heater, limiting me to 5 minute showers and I didnt report it because I figured I could save some money.  When I run the heater at night, I can have it only run in my room and I turn off the heat in the rest of the apartment.  I've been charging batteries for my RC car(4 hour charge) and recharging energizer batteries(12+ hour charge) for other RC toys.  I also charge the battery in a small handheld vacum cleaner.  These things aren't always charging, just occasionally.

My bill came today and it was $78.  Does this seem high for a bill in Oregon?  Most people were telling me that it should be like $30.

Doesn't seem too high and I live in FL so there is a lot of A/C during the summer and not much heat during the winter.

LMAO.

The room is warm and the RC car is for outdoor use and I eat the egg on two slices of toast with butter and jelly with a bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit and...funny thinking of you thinking that.

RP,

Don't know what caused your bill to be high, but I usually turn off my  water heater at the breaker when I don't need it.  It's saves me money on my electric bill.  I just turn it on about 30-45 minutes before my shower and turn it off when I'm done.  As far as other things, have you considered investing in quick charge batteries?  They're a little more expensive, but they usually charge in about 2-4 hours.  I believe they also make quick chargers for RC cars that will charge a batter in about an hour.  All small investments, but will reduce your bill a little more.

I'll look into quick chargers.  One they fix my water heater, I'm going to try shutting it off when not in use, somebody had suggested that in the past.  Thanks.

it seems that he's implying that he'd be saving money by taking 5 minutes showers instead of 15-20 minute shower, not by not having to buy a new water heater himself.

perhaps the broken water heater is less efficient at heating your 5mins of water.

haha I pictured a similar scene. That whole story just sounded so depressing. Man I would really focus on getting a job so I wouldn't have to live like that penny pincher lifestyle.

Also sometimes those electric box things with the gauge on the side of your house can fuck up and drain WAY more power than they should be so maybe have pg&e come by and check it out.  Not sure if it costs or not but you never know it could be the problem. I don't know if the bill looks wrong for what you are using but if you feel like its wrong check that shit out. And no its nothing you can do yourself.

An electric heater usually uses between 1000-1500 watts depending on whether its on low or high.

As stated by others, the broken water heater may be draining power. I had a refrigerator that was slowly dying and as it got worse, it used more and more power. Of course, as things go, I didn't notice the difference except that my bill kept going up every month, until the fridge just fucking died. Once we got a new fridge the bill dropped by about $20 a month.

Get some CFL bulbs to replace your regular bulbs, that way you can afford to have some light on.

Honestly though, my power bill is around $300 a month in Seattle, but there's 3 people here, plus we have a ton of computers and electrical devices to charge.

$78 a month doesn't seem that high.

I'd save by taking shorter showers.
