Exercise is very helpful IME. Natural endorphin rush= :feelsgoodman:

I used to be all against anti depressants but they have their place. I've read a lot of good things about Wellbutrin. Benzos are good too for this, but harder to get legally. As long as you don't plan on staying on them long term, I don't see a big issue with it.

There's a lot of ignorance in this thread.

Do tell your doctors what has and hasn't worked for you in the past.  Go into explicit detail.  Don't just tell them "******** didn't work for me." or " I didn't like *********."  Tell them exactly how it made you feel, why you believe it didn't work for you, and exactly what your symptoms were/are.  Explain to them any positive or negative feelings you had about it.  The doctors heavily rely on your experience with the meds to let them know what will and won't work for you.

I was on lexapro, xanax, effexor xr, and a few others I can't remember offhand.  Lexapro and Effexor made me forget shit constantly... not like Xanax.  Those fuckers would make me forget entire CHUNKS of life.  It's like I was in a daze and the only times I could truly remember was when I had skipped or forgotten a dose.  I was miserable.

I was on Xanax for nearly a year... I thought it was to solution to my problems. That is until I missed an appointment with my psych.  Up to that point I was taking 4mg each day (2mg, twice a day).  I could only get refills when I went to my psych.  When I missed my appointment, I missed my refill.  For nearly 2 weeks I was miserable.  I was shaking, crying, sick, and suicidal.  I would uncontrollably vomit and break out into nearly uncontrollable fits.  Eventually it all wore off, but I was still a complete wreck.  My father had suggested I go to his doctor for further eval.

When I saw the dr, he suggested I take Clonazepam and started me at .5mg a day.  I laughed as I was used to 4mg of Xanax each day... Boy was I in for a surprise.  .5mg a day knocked my dick in the dirt.  After a few months he upped to dose to .5mg twice a day and over time, 1mg twice a day.

The first week I walked around like a zombie.  I didn't suffer from the social anxieties I typically suffered from.  I felt alive.  I felt free.  I began attending a support group for people that suffered from similar symptoms as I did.  After several months of counceling, I began to slowly wean myself from my meds.  This wasn't a choice by my doctor, but by me.  I knew that slowly weaning myself would benefit me.  I began a 3 month long process of gradually tapering my doses from 1mg twice a day, down to .5mg a day over a one month period.  After these months, I began tapering down to .25mg twice a day over the next month.  Then .25 once a day until I felt I didn't need it anymore.

When I was finally weaned from my meds, I had one last appointment with my doctor.  He prescribed some sort of detox for me that lasted 2 weeks.  It was some sort of pill that would help curb any cravings.  For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called.  I don't know if it helped or not since I was only taking it for about 10 days, but since then I haven't taken a single benzo.  I don't feel like shit like I used to and I feel like I can live a normal life.  I am no longer plagued by the depression and anxiety that once controlled my life.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me and I will gladly answer any questions you have.  If I am unable to answer your questions, I will do my best to point you in the right directions.

Peace be with you.

Listen to this guy. ^^^

He's giving the best advice out of anyone. If you feel that taking medication will help you, do it. Just be aware that medication is only a means, it cannot solve your problem. Just like Slabbius said in his post, it's a great tool that can help you take the first steps towards having a happy and well-adjusted life.

--------------------
The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

Clonazepam AKA Klonopin

Not nearly as addictive as Xanax since the half-life of the drug is more than 2x that of Xanax and the addiction potential is less than 1/4 of Xanax.  I had major Xanax addictions, but with Klonopin, I was only on it for a few months and slowly weaned myself off of all depression/anxiety meds.  If it weren't for Kpins, I would still be stuck on some bullshit meds.

I'm thankful for Kpins!

Klonopin is good for short-term anxiety relief. If you take it for a long time (months or years) it will likely worsen your depression. CNS depressants affect your body's ability to produce and use serotonin and other important neurotransmitters. Moreover, your body will develop a tolerance (and possibly addiction). I'm feeling the side-effects of benzodiazepine withdrawal right now. It's very mild for me, but it is still not fun.

Find a drug that works for you. Take other people's advice with a grain of salt. Something that works for one person can be dangerous or ineffective for another.

Don't listen to these idiots saying "don't take anti-depressants." If you are seriously depressed then you should consider a combination of medication, exercise and other techniques (meditation, deep breathing, thought journals).

Medication is often prescribed too readily, but it is extremely effective for many people. I get sick of people on here saying all anti-depressants are "evil" because they didn't work for them. There are so many people on here posting about depressive symptoms and the response is always "fuck that medication shit". It's mind boggling.

If lifestyle changes aren't enough, then try medicine. Why would you avoid something that could vastly improve your quality of life?

Thank you, NobodyCares.

Everyone's body chemistry is different.  What may be a normal amount of dopamine or serotonin to you, may be too little or too much for someone else to handle.  For the sake of argument, let's say that 100 is the normal amount of serotonin or dopamine for me. Well, 150 may be the normal amount for some people, yet with others, 75 or 50 is the normal amount.

Many of the psychological/psychiatric drugs can easily be weaned from if proper technique is employed.

Mantis has extraordinarily explained the usage of Benzos far better than I have.  If you feel your condition is something you can overcome through hard work and determination, go for it.  If you feel otherwise, be very careful about the medicine that is prescribed to you.  It can either make or break you.

I wish you the best of luck.

Again, if you have any questions, please feel free to PM me and I will do my best to answer your questions or at least guide you in the right direction.

Peace be with you.

eating healthy for me involves a lot of veggies and fruit. Im a vegetarian.

slabbius thank you for taking the time to actually discuss this with me. I was never really into exercising. I have a very fit and tone body yet do no exercise. Its quite weird actually. During the spring/summer months, I go hiking and boating and shit but during the winter I just sit around.

I also have severe anxiety and it constantly feels like my chest is getting tight. I went to the bank the other day with a jar full of change. Basically ANY time I go to a bank or similar location, I get like a panic attack or something. I feel like everyone is staring at me like Im going to rob the place.

I was suppose to go back for a 3mo check up for the last meds I was on but missed the appointment because they never called to confirm. I guess Im going to try to get back in there.

A little back story...

my mother died when I was pretty young (10th grade) and me and my dad didnt get along well. I got sent to many foster homes and shit. I havent cried about anything in over 10 years. Im starting to realize that I deal with being sad by being angry.

Is it healthy to not cry? can it cause any medial problems if you dont cry?

I've been curing my depression with bud and intense masturbation and avoiding the jerks that make me feel bad about myself when ever possible.
Also talking random shit to and about people here on the shroomery really helps me feel better, it helps to not feel as depressed about your fucked up life when you realize that all of us have fucked up things to deal with in our lives.

I was considering pills to hide from my feelings but then I realized I can just use my pain to help me become the asshole it takes to make it in this life.

I would suggest not to get into a drug schedule. I just burn trees whenever I can.

Don't bash meditating, either. It may sound fucking ridiculous, but when you find out how to, it works.

That's what I hear, about meditation.

And true that on the fact that pot is not an anti depressant, sometimes it helps and sometimes it makes me feel way way worse, masturbating (especially the way I do it) almost always makes me feel really good and after I'm done all I have the energy to do is sleep.

I've suffered from depression for quite a long time, and i'm currently on the waiting list to receive cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). one of my friends in the past has had this and said it helped loads.

so maybe cbt could help you?

and personally, one of my goals this year is to learn how to meditate, as i've heard it really can be beneficial, so maybe think about that too

good luck with whatever you do

Im sorry for bashing meditation but I feel that in a time of severe panic and distress, that will not help me.

Then again, I dont know the ins and out of it. Its just not something I really ever considered
