Visual Studio learning resources
    #12047149 -

Hello,

I'm looking to pick up some skills (n00b) in Visual Studio/SQL Server skills. Does anyone know of any good resources/DVDs I can watch? I find it easier to watch than read, esp when first picking something up.

I see a lot of paid content on the web but don't know if any of this is really worth signing up for.

Thanks!

There are quite a few resources. Which version are you using?

We've got VS Pro 2005 at work. The msdn site seems pretty good but at this point I think I need to consume all that I can!

Thanks!

I would suggest getting a copy of Visual Studio .NET or at least Visual Studio 6. Which language are you wanting to work in?

Yeah I 'acquired' a copy a couple of weeks ago. I think i'd like to start of nice and easy in c# - seems pretty similar to VBA. Think I need to pick up some skills with SSRS and SQL server too though.

What's your line of business, if you don't mind me asking?

personally, i would suggest learning a language that is cross platform before something so specialized, but thats just me...that way, you can compile your code on and for just about anything, instead of just making .exe files.

Learn Java if you want to pick up some good skill that will be more marketable.  I have been a software engineer for a fortune 200 company for the past 2 years, and haven't used visual studio once, and even through all of my schooling, never used it there either.  In college, we coded in c++ for the most part, in a sun solaris environment, and everything was compiled using gcc on the command line.  We also did a bit of java in a lame program called BlueJay, since it was really an MIS class for people that didn't really know how to code well, i did all my homework in eclipse though, and just brought the code in on usb drives.  We also did IBM 370 assembler, through we ran it inside of an emulator that ran within windows.

At work, i code J2EE (Java code mostly in the form of servlets, applets, action controllers, etc. as well as presentation stuff in JSP/javascript, which is outdated now, i think JSF is what is used) for the middletier and presentation tier, and then we use c++ on CICS for the host, and there is still some cobol and PL1 code that we use in IMS, all of which are cross platform, and over time have moved across platforms...

Regardless, there is still a market for MS developers, though its becoming smaller and smaller every day...I am however glad you are interested in coding, its great and i really like it...sorry i couldn't really answer your question though...

peace
