Zhuangzi and Reality Tunnels

So this idea has popped up a lot lately and really resonated with me.

If you don't know Zhuangzi, he was a Chinese philospher who lived about a century after Confucius. Here are what he identifies as the problems with people's struggle:

  • We are limited by our perspectives (RAW's idea of "Reality Tunnels)
  • Is knowledge possible? How do we know what we know? How do we know how we know what we know? Are values Universal? Is what is beautiful to one person beautiful to someone else?
  • Language is not fixed: We use language to make judgments on how things are. However, the terms aren't fixed or neatly defined(a perfect example being the liberal/conservative dichotomy in contemporary politics). Words change and people have different concepts.
    Language takes away from the uniqueness of reality. No two things are 100 percent identical, although language acts as people are people, a coke bottle is a coke bottle, and so on. 
  • Duality: Up-down, black-white, good-bad... Things can only be defined by their opposite, and exist only in relevance to each other.
  • Conventions and Constructs. In example, picture a dead person on the floor. Some may say this is "bad." But where is the "bad" in relation to the dead person on the floor? We all have our perspectives reinforced by our conventions. Attempting to convince others of your reality tunnel is a waste of time, disputes are irreconcilable.


Well, what can we do about this?

Well, Zhuangzi would say if you don't think this is a problem then you can be on your way. But if you do think this is a problem, you can take on a broader perspective, that of the Way (the Tao). Everything is equal. The human perspective is not "better" than any other perspective, and ultimately we are all One. Being mindful of the Way allows us to transcend the inherent duality of the world. This does not mean sacrificing all societal conventions and judgments, such as stopping at a red light and going at a green, but allows one to stay true to the Self in our own judgments and beliefs about reality, and realizing we are all taking different paths up the mountain.

Does any of this make any sense? I'm trying to get at an idea that I don't believe words could do justice to.

I like to compare this to standing in the ocean, letting the flow of water move your body.
Instead of resisting this flow, I allow the energy flow to carry and guide me-- I'm only aware of this energy and allow myself to naturally conform. Like how electricity takes the path of least resistance or water always flows downhill.
