The Bible is an instrument of authority-based control
    #6697988 -

While I know through my own experience that 'God' is something that is very real, much of what is taught about God throughout history has its own purpose far from enlightening people. Case in point, The Bible. Simply observe this quote taken from Romans 13:1

Quote:
1Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. 6For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

The purpose of this, and the rest of The Bible, is to purpose the idea to people that God is a figure of authority, and that authority should be obeyed on prinicple alone based on what is written about authority. This is a target for people unable to, as Timothy Leary aptly puts it; Think for themselves, and question authority. Not just what authority tells us, but the ENTIRE concept altogether. Do you really feel so stupid that you need some rich cocksucker to write laws dictating your behaviors...all the way down to what kind of mushrooms you can lawfully eat? What is actually happening? Why do schools teach us to repress our natural desires and obey authority regardless of how we feel about the situation? To keep people working, to make other people rich. Fear-based authority is a tool for human manipulation and nothing else. Most people are too blind to see this and are content with the sheeplehood.

All authority is based on the illusion that there is an ultimate authority (such as MFG [mean fucker God]) or that their view of the world is the only one that's right; when right and wrong are only mental constructs having no tangible place in reality and thus do not exist. It's not wrong to kill other people. Nor is it not right. It just is.

The Bible should be renounced and seen for what it is, a tool for manipulation, and the effect it has on people...keep them from exploring life themselves and questioning the status quo and coming up with their own answers to life...which I assure you, YOUR answers are waiting for you to remember them.

always question those who authorize their own authority and especially question those who authorize their own authority with an authoritarian divine principle.

you are your best authority. :mushroom2:

i think its an instrument of the people created for the fact that we are scared of life and in infinitness and so we must limit ourselves with certain rules in order to calm our nerves and make things easier, and aparentley the best ways to regulate overal, basically unquestioned "laws" is to bind them into our culture with religion

Yep.

All religions are a form of 'reality tunnel'. Essentially the believers are brainwashed.

Not all religions, Buddhism and Taoism are centered around silence, their teachings are inherently hollow and have hollow guardians assuring that they are wielded properly. While all ideas are prone to misuse, these two in particular are very useful and wonderful tools for liberation.

So then this is my qualm..... all this is true but there are people, and I know them, who hate authority very much, who think authority is "Satan" and who are Christians, who believe in Christ, who believe in hell, who have merged the Bible with their subconscious, and who really really hate "America" and are seeing it come down

and they will say things that, in addition to the truths that authority is evil, authority has also obscured spiritual truth (Jesus) and that this, still, is the only valid pathway.

This is where I am stuck, only because I could go to hell of course...... their Shepherd wields a sword............

which is odd

he is a shepherd but he also says he comes to bring a sword.

but any way what I am saying is that they believe in Jesus and believe America and world governments are evil...... and there are a lot of them, so why.....?

I feel that when you project your religious beliefs on the outer world and don't recognize them as components of your own psyche you fall into the trap. Replacing the spiritual with the physical mistakingly reoreints the reality of GOD within as a state of consciouness. As you worship in error you project your own shadow onto that which is seemingly at odds with your own belief system, the other. 1/0, on/off, GOD/SATAN, Jesus/Lucifer... Solution: GOD=GOOD+EVIL/Aliens. Beliefs are powerful reality building blocks, but just like cement or brick can be crubled into sand. Building a sand castle with bricks is silly. Start at the beach. GOD will manifest as wrath, hence the sword. If of course my take on reality is even remotley close to what the deal really is. I know I would be pissed if I didn't see the pryamid and know that the capstone is coming.

Buddhism is still a reality tunnel.

Its a map that the human mind uses to percieve reality.

Buddhists believe in karma, reincarnation and not harming others (i think?).

All these are perspectives (albeit good ones). Thus its still a reality tunnel.

You speak as though God is some mean authority forcing us to obey him. The opposite is true. God created man with free will. You do not have to accept him, nor do you have to follow his "rules".

The NT poses a great question:

Jesus' peers, in an attempt to catch him slipping, asked, "which of the commandments is the greatest?"

Jesus replied, "Love the Lord with all your heart, and treat your neighbor as you wish to be treated."

He just divided the 10 commandments in to the 2 principles behind them.

What is so bad about that?

Bertrandt Russel (misspelled?), a famous athiest stated, "there is no purpose to life without a God." David Hume alo agrees with this school of thought. He is also a famous athiest-in theology circles.

So, if it is just survival of the fittest, why should we care about terrorism, child prostitution, family, yourself, etc.

It is unfair to the Bible to decipher confusing passages, without a firm understanding of hermeneutics and exegesis. If you do not understand what those words mean or how to accomplish them, than your idealogues of christianity are not clear. This is true for all religions with ancient texts.

I really don't care if you listen to me, but real chritians don't sell prayer snot rags, condemn gays, or suggest killing foreign dictators (that 700 Club bastard does, and he is crazy- Pat Robertson. Same thing for Jerry Falwell and Benny Hinn).

Fear in itself is not that bad. The Bible teaches if you fear God than you have nothing else to fear. If that doesn't make sense to you than you really haven't got a clear understanding of God and his relationship with mankind.

Yep, pretty much all religions reflect the social structure of the culture from which they emerged. Authoritiarian societies produce authoritarian religions, usually to keep people from rebelling against the shitty deal they get on the bottom of the pile. Egalitarian societies produce accessible and generally animistic or animatistic types of religion or spiritual practice. Then there's all the shades between the former and latter...

Well God expects his people to behave right, we can't go around doing what thou wilt, sorry pal, the Bible wasn't meant to tickle your ears.
Sorry that it bothers you so that God says you can't grow the shrooms because the law says not to....
Theres alot in the Bible that people don't want to do but there was one that died for our sins and those of us that are saved from hell are sometimes grateful and loving enough to do as he commands, I don't know who anyone thinks they are by questioning God.  I use to worship the devil myself so I know what it's like to be like the rest of you, and thank God I'm not!

You went from worshiping one mythological character to another. Question everything. I question why you think there's a god. lol

Here's my favorite Bible verse:
Quote:
"And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned -- 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

Wrap your head around why your god wants to damn people so bad. If you dare...

I don't read the Bible but that text reads to me as if being "damned" is the lie or delusion.

I agree with all posters except JesusSaves...

This thread is old as rotten piss too.
