Turntables > CD players > laptops

Where do you draw the line of worth?

Is a DJ who uses cd tables just as worthy as one who uses vinyl?  What about a laptop?

can someone with a laptop create the same vibe as someone actually pressing buttons and moving knobs?

I personally use CD tables at this point.  But in my future I want a laptop for producing purposes.  Now a laptop costs as much, or less as a newer CD system + mixer.  choices choices choices.

Laptop dawg. These days you can get a nice laptop, and hook yourself up any number of badass programmable midi devices/keyboards and whatnot.
And you can still turn knobs and all that jazz with all the powers of a laptop too.
I'm no pro DJ myself, but I hang out with enough of them and most of them seem to use laptops and stuff like this:

OOOOOOH BUTTONS

they only  make promos on vinyl, so to be legitimately playing the music i like they would have to be using Decks.

so, what would be a really cool setup using a laptop?  how much hardware control can you get? what is the best software?

I think it depends what you're doing, more production or more live mixes. And what kind of hardware..
You can get basically unlimited control with the right combination of software and midi controllers, etc.
Ableton Live is good for live shit I hear, not so much production. Cubase and Reason people seem to like as well for production.  Sorry I don't know more.

cubase and reason are both music production software, i don't think they really work for being a DJ.

I use cubase, but it sucks for live play. I Would plan on just mixing, not live reproduction at this point.

Just using traktor or something of the like.

a friend of mine, uses a virtual DJ app and then runs RCA to a serado box, and then to a mixer, and using 2 virtual decks (via laptop) that run to channel 1 and 2 on a proper mixer.

Personally, I'm always going to be a big fan of vinyl.  It's what I learned to spin on, and some of my favorite/most rare tracks are on vinyl.  I love the control of a turntable.

I tend to use CDJ's a bit more though; I get a LOT of new music, almost all of it on mp3.  Since I don't have Serato or a similar program, the only way I have to play these badass tunes is CDJ.  I admit, they're not my favorite (the gay ass jog wheel, the tiny buttons you gotta press, etc), but they allow me to play tracks that I wouldn't have a chance to play otherwise.

In regards to the last paragraph, I could do the mp3 into vinyl with Serato, but I don't have money for that shit right now and using someone else's isn't so much fun; you want your own songs.

It's all about personal preference; each method has it's pros and cons.  It just amounts to what you're more comfortable with.

For me the title sums it up. I've always used CD decks, but over christmas I learnt to mix on vinyl and I gotta say not only is the experience that much more fun to do (not to mention easier, cause its more hands on), but people enjoy watching you mix vinyl a whole lot more.

I feel that it takes a whole lot more skill to use vinyl compared to modern cd decks as well, most high end cd players do nearly all of the work for you, coupled with a good mixer and you pretty much just have to be able to start the tracks at the same time.

I respect people that use laptops only when they play mind blowing sets that could not be accomplished with more traditional methods, I mean if you see someone that transcends a whole bunch of genres seamlessly and actually creates an insight into their own world with a soundscape via laptop then fair enough, but if its just another goon using able to mix psytrance then they can get fucked; no respect from me.
