Dunking/Recasing Poo? Those with Poo-Experience Help Please!
    #1200641 - 01/08/03 01:04 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

My friend has a few casings of Poo cased in 50-50

The mycelium never colonized the casing layer, even after waiting a few weeks. He decided to put them into the fruiting chamber anyway. He figured that one reason they didn't colonize the casing layer was because it was too wet.

Well, they all fruited (at the sides of the casing of course).

The poo "cakes" in the pans are dry as a bone. Is there any way to rehydrate them? Or is it not necessary?

Also, how would he go about re-casing them? Can he just scrape off the old casing material and apply a fresh layer? What are the chances the mycelium will colonize this layer even though they didn't colonize the previous layer?

Any other ideas why the original casing layer didn't colonize?

Because the casing layers dry out pretty fast in the grow chamber, he has to mist them daily. So he figures a deeper casing layer would be appropriate so that it could hold more moisture. If this is the second or maybe even third flush of cased poo, is there a good chance that the network will be able to colonize a thicker layer?

Sorry about all the questions, and thanks in advance for any replies!

not a good idea to put a casing layer on poo until after 1st flush...
Since you already got pinning on the side pour some water  on the around the sides and it will flush again but from the sides...
beats no flushing

The casing layer does not have to be colonized, more, a colonized casing layer is called overlay and it's indeed a problem in most cases. Be sure you achieve pinning parameters regarding temperature, Rh and air exchange. You got to have a moist but not swamped casing layer and do not tight or pack it when you first apply it.
What kind of method are you using to raise Rh, perlite ? Anyway, you should be the one giving that kind of info, get used to it and read more about casings on the faq section.

You don't want the casing layer too wet.
It won't colonize and it will probably get contams.

Scrape off the old casing material and apply a fresh casing layer.
Don't make the casing layer too thick.
How thick of a casing layer did you use?

Did you colonize the casing in an incubator?
What where the temps if you did?

I never dunk poo....I just add new casing layers between flushes.

is not putting the casing layer on poo until after the first flush you opinion from experience, or does that seem to be the consensus? From now on, I'll suggest it to him. Thanks!

I was under the impression that overlay isn't really a problem with cubes. And that there should be at least some colonization of the casing layer if you are to achieve an even pinset. Is this wrong? BTW, thanks to all three of you who replied. You're opinions mean the world to me.

I think it was too wet to start with which is why he threw it into his  grow cabinet.

His substrait was about two inches, and the casing layer about a half inch to an inch.

Yes, he used an incubator that was kept in the low to mid eighties.

With the circulation system in his grow cabinet, the casing layer dries out within a day. Is this acceptable?

Thanks again guys for your replies. Its good to get the attention of some of the more veteran growers, and hope to achieve that status some day.... I can't believe how long I've been addicted to the forum already.

-Peace

To stop it from flushing out the sides, put black tape or a garbage bag around the sides of the container. Good luck!

ha thanks. I don't have transparent casing containers... But as the casing uses up the available nutrients and moisture, the casing shrinks letting in light to the sides. This being the only mycelium exposed to light causing the sides to pin.

nice cabinet but I'm a little worried that it won't keep the humidity up for you.

your casing layer was too thick.
you should have had a 1/2" or less for a casing layer.

if you are colonizing casings in the incubator....I have noticed that they do better when the incubator is around 80 degrees F.

I wouldn't be happy if my casings were drying out in a day!
You must have a humidity problem.
Mist the casing when it is looking dry.
If you can't tell....use a better casing material, something that you can tell if its drying out.
60/40 Verm and Coco Coir is fantastic....you can see when you need to mist it!

I have changed my opinion on casing poo...I case poo all the time now.
I believe the casing layer will protect the poo from Contams in the air.
I'd rather have a Contams on a casing layer than in the substrate...you might be able to fight off the contam on the casing layer.

You haven't worked with Puerto Ricans yet have you....lolzz
Overlay can be a big problem with certain strains like PR's, F+, SA's.
There is a big difference between a nice colonized casing layer and an Overlayed one.
You just want the mycelium to be starting to break through the casing layer... not covering the casing layer up and consuming it.

Good luck!

it's from experience...

You can add a new casing layer to your poo but i'm betting your still going to get side pinning :frown: It always sucks when that happens...
just add some water to your dung and wait. best advice i can give for that scenerio.
hope you get all your pins on top
