Re: did you take highschool seriously? [Re: Shroomism]

I had a friend in High School who was really smart. He always complained about how much he hated it and he couldn't wait to get into the real world. As soon as High School ended, he got caught dealing drugs, and is locked up. Kind of a shame, but I think it happens often.

Homework is fucking lame.

I think the biggest problem with school is the MURDER of creativity.
That and the fact that they just want you to learn/memorize/regurgitate facts.
I don't learn like that. I have to UNDERSTAND the concepts behind something to KNOW it.
It's not enough that I know that it works.... I need to know WHY it works.
You just memorize something and you'll forget it a week later.
Not everyone learns in a completely linear fashion and they need to realize that.

Yeah exactly. I think notion of homework is pretty insane. Maybe if the school itself was more captivating kids would devote more time and attention to it.

Homework helped me in certain subjects.  Learning through repetition definitely helped me grasp a lot of complicated concepts, but there are just some things you can't learn by doing an hour of homework.  I saw on the news a few weeks back that a school in Canada banned homework.

I didnt go to high school, but I found elementary school and college to be filled with problem solving and concepts rather than memorizing.  Memorizing is just how dumb people cope with their inability to problem solve.

Well I guess abolished is a better term.  They're testing new theories on education.  The days are a tad longer but there's 0 homework.  If it's successful it might spread.

That's pretty funny but a good idea.

"Testing new theories on education?"

Wow I thought we banned anything that might improve society??!?!

well certainly going to college gives you a general idea of a direction to go in. But it doesn't necessarily make you smarter, or give you any huge leg up on someone that didn't go, unless you are in a very specific field. 9 times out of 10, actual experience trumps a book education. Not trying to downplay a college education, I just couldn't afford it.. all I'm saying is that you don't HAVE to do it like most people seem to think, and you aren't doomed to failure if you don't. Smart people are smart people regardless of what school they go to, and just because you can afford college doesn't mean you will be better because of it or have ten times better chance of getting X Job. Sure, it certainly does open up more doors and more opportunities. But you can still open those doors yourself. And you can get a college level education, without going to college.

I totally agree with you that it does not necessarily make you smarter, though it does gain you a great level of factual knowledge you may not gain otherwise.  It also shows a great level of dedication to many employers, that you can start something and actually follow through to finish it over many years.

i couldn't afford college, i had to go on loans, still have to pay back an assload, but i greatly feel that assload is more than worth it, as the income i make today, is far higher than the income i would have been making without it...i didn't get to go right out of highschool though, as i made some bad choices and had a kid when i was 17.  So i had to take 2 years off to work my way up to making double minimum wage, where i could cut back on work hours and still do the school work, and even then, it took me 5 years to graduate, as i was a full time student, but only able to do 12 hours/semester as i still had to work about 30 hours a week to make ends meet.  Now that I am done though, i am mroe able to supply a higher quality life for my child, we live in a better neighborhood, she gets to go to better schools, and be in activities outside of school i never would have been able to afford....

peace

very much so, but many college classes are just what you were after, at least the good ones.  Gradeschool is shit, and really doesn't teach you much.

i took it very seriously, was varsity basketball, top 10 in my class, something like a 106, or maybe 112 gpa (we didn't use the 4.0 system)

yah, then i realized, what the fuck.  why am i trying so hard at something that means nothing at all.  so i dropped out.  haha.  it really helped my acne, let me tell you.  that shit is directly related to stress.  :dancingbear:

actually, the acne went away when i stopped taking school seriously, which was like 6 months before i dropped out.  anyway

I know, I went to a few semesters of college, it was an awesome experience, complete 180 from high school, I would gladly go if I could, just to learn about things I'm interested in.
I just couldn't afford to be going to school, and living at the same time. Without parents to support me, which is how most people seem to be able to manage it.

i totally agree.  Though many of my friends at work who had their parents help them through college, never had to work for themselves before this job, never had to actually support themselves seem better off monetarily, they are much worse off in just basic life skills.  They have bad work ethic, as they have never done it before and seem to have a much harder time moving up...personally from my experiences, i think working through college and gettting loans to go and whatnot puts you at a BETTER position than those that had the assistance once you are in the real world.  And the part about affording to go and working at the same time, im sure you could have done it, but can tell you it sucks, i had to do it at the same time as supporting a child, and no, my parents didn't help at all, they lived miles away, and neither of them finished college, and didn't have the resources to send me.  I got used to only sleeping 4-5 hours a night, as i did it for 5 years, which now that i graduated a few years ago, im still struggling getting a normal schedule, i get up around 6am and still don't go to bed until midnight or one, don't know why i do it to myself now that i don't have to...but meh, it is what it is.

peace

High school was a fucking joke and a half.

I was in AB physics and trig in the 8th grade, college level english and so on.. when I got to high school it was like I got dropped back 5 years. I wasn't learning a damn thing and I couldn't deal with their bullshit brainwashing Nazi regime, my high school wasn't a place to learn, it was a social conditioning camp.

I got expelled 14 times in my freshman year and broke some record..halfway through my sophomore year I got expelled and dropped out. High school was a fucking joke, I just caused as much havoc as possible. I was a pothead all through school so I'm sure that had some impact. The jocks used to make fun of us, calling us potheads and losers and whatnot, then a couple years later when they started getting into college and shit, all of a sudden we were the coolest guys around to them and they were asking us for hookups and to hangout, ha.

I invented this game in high school called hallway of destruction. Basically you wait until everyone is in class, then you sprint down the hallfways causing as much destruction as possible in as short amount of time as possible. Jump on the railing, tear posters off walls, spins get extra points.. you pretend you are super mario brothers, and jump up and punch out ceiling tiles, 20 points if you split them cleanly in half, only 10 if they break up.

dude you're right on the money 'social conditioning camp' HAHAH what a bunch of fgas. My buddies and i use to steal dope, cars, break into the school at night, run from cops, piles of drugs. then i fried my brain, moved because im 'antisocial'. now im just lookin googuly eyed TWO MORE YEARS.
