shyness poll

i actually don't like the word "shy"... it's really a euphemism for scared - they should just call it what it is. anyway, i'm in the shy-and-haven't-beaten-it category... curious what the general stats are, and especially interested in what people who have beaten it have to say!

I used to be pretty shy. But at some point I just stopped giving a shit.
Never gonna get anywhere in life being shy.
I'm sure ingesting copious amounts of drugs may have played a part in that too.

i kinda know what you mean by not giving a shit... but it's really not that simple as just not giving a shit, as you know... i'm able to do that once in a while, but i also revert back to my fearful state at some point... i feel like i'm trying to escape gravity :frown:

I don't recomend taking drugs to overcome it.
Xanax is pretty nice, adderall is great for confidence building, if you can incorporate that confidence you get from being sped out into soberiety you'd be good to go.
But again, it'd be best if you didn't use drugs.
It could completely backfire.
not being high can be a real confidence killer, and some people end up seeking the drug for confidence, it's a pretty bad path.

i fall into a category you haven't got listed.  i'm still somewhat shy and reserved, but nowhere near as much as i used to be.

i've taken great and successful steps towards becoming more outgoing.  and while it is much easier for me to get out there and talk to strangers, my natural inclination is still to hush up and step off to the side.  it takes a very concerted effort for me to focus on being outgoing.  it's a bit mentally exhausting.  but i am capable of doing it and even find great reward in doing it [sometimes].

i'm with ya on not using drugs in that way for confidence....

taking psychedelic in a certain way has actually helped me. (i say a certain way, because when i took them irresponsibly and had bad trips - i'm taking about ones that gave me PTSD - truly killed my confidence..... but the good trips - including "difficult trips" - have helped)

besides strictly psychedelic drugs, i can only think of two drugs that may help with long-term confidence:

MDMA... only problem is it's bad for your brain... i'm taking a long break, or just waiting till they come up with a safer alternative.

beta-blockers... these drugs don't change how you mind, but rather block they physical response of fear... so one can use this in terms of exposure - as in, taking it, going out and approaching people and whatnot, while the brain gradually relearns your fear-response... now if you do with with most drugs like alcohol or benzos, the opposite happens - it becomes harder to do such things without the drugs... but with beta-blocks, because it doesn't change how you think... doesn't work in this way.... i actually don't know much about how it would work in this way, but this is what i understand...

i also wonder if this poll is representative of the normal population... it might be biased to have more shy people, since spending lots of time of the forum is bad for not being shy, and many people who aren't shy probably have better things to do!

what ive learned is you can have a "fuck it" attitude but it honestly means almost jack shit unless you truly feel that way...

at least its like that for me...but it does help. the key is to change how you feel, meditate i guess
