Do random acts of kindness restore your faith in humanity?

Do random acts of kindness restore your faith in humanity?

The other evening while I was at the corner store picking up some beer, a random drunk dude offered to buy my beer for me.  He was at least 55-65 years old.  I was purchasing a 12-pack of Heineken and some Four Lokos.  He actually bought my 12-pack and Four Lokos for me.  I told him he didn't have to, but he insisted.  When I tried to purchase some cigarettes, he bought those for me, too.  I tried to pay him back, but all he told me was to return the favor to the next person who I thought needed help. While I was talking to him, he completely ignored me and drove off.

I was completely amazed by such an act.  Has anyone ever experienced a similar act of random kindness?

He was drunk and he drove? That completely cancels out the random act of kindness IMO. That guy is a dickhead.

that's an awfully absurd and pessimistic point of view, especially on a drug forum in which i'd expect the greater population to live and breathe in the moment and not get their panties tangled in knots over substances.

that's pretty awesome kanglow.  i know i've had some similarly awesome things happen to me, but i'm gonna have to think on it for a while.  i just got that feeling though.  i'm sure at some point i've received an unwarranted random act of kindness.

yeah, they do.

i make it a point to stop for every broken car on the side of the road that I see, and do everything i can for them...

i hope that I instill hope in humanity in them.

it just so happens that alcohol and cigarettes kill more people than pretty much anything else in the world, so i have a right to hate on it

sure, in the long-term.  not everyone cares whether they die of lung cancer when they're like sixty or seventy.

and besides, we're all adults.  we're all well informed about the dangers of those substances.  adults who have weighed the costs and benefits make their decision to act according to their risk aversion and wont of living in the moment.

you're just coming across as a pisser of parades over a genuinely kind-hearted gesture.

That's so cool. I've had people give me free drugs before at concerts and stuff, but never something like that.

There was this movie about doing good to a person and in return asking only to do good for 3 people in need and passing the message along.

Pay it Forward. I try and help out when I can. I wish I helped out more though. I do small things all the time though. I'll always give a friend in need of bud some for free. I know they will pay it back and it helps them out.

I think that was Pay It Forward, with Kevin Spacy and maybe the 6th Sense kid?

I was in a ditch about 2 months ago and not one single truck drove by without stopping.  This was out in bumfuck nowhere too, people I'd usually dismiss as rednecks.  They got my friend and I out of the ditch.  Definitely a reminder that most people are not shitheads.

Anyone know of a site that shows soup kitchen events and the like? I'd love to help out but don't know where to look. I was on some acid a few months back and I was in the city. It really got me down to see the Homeless in the same area as those who had so much.

Most people on a "drug" forum such as this often have a better understanding of what they're putting into their body. Alcohol and tobacco are poison, and barely anybody realizes what they're doing to their own bodies when they ingest this stuff. Just because this is a drug forum doesn't mean that we all like ingesting as many chemicals as we can. I don't think very many people here do heroin or meth or crack, I believe we're a pretty responsible bunch. Most alcoholics die in their early 30's or 40's - Not that I care what you do with your body, it's up to you, but don't say that most people are well informed of the risks, when they are clearly not. After people try mushrooms, they often quit drinking alcohol and tobacco, or at least from my experiences.

They destroyed mine b/c nobody ever passed it on or returned the favor. I used to go out of my way to help people, but now I'm a dick and it works out much better for me.
